Q1: What is the difference between liquid-liquid extraction and solid-liquid extraction?
Liquid-liquid extraction transfers a dissolved solute between two immiscible liquid phases, typically aqueous and organic. Solid-liquid extraction transfers a solute from a solid matrix into a liquid solvent through mixing and agitation. Both rely on solubility differences, but solid-liquid extraction requires filtration to separate the solid residue from the extracted liquid phase.
Q2: Why must the two phases in an extraction be immiscible?
Immiscible phases remain separate and do not mix, like oil and water, allowing clean phase separation. If phases were miscible and completely homogeneous after mixing, the solute could not be isolated into a distinct phase. Immiscibility ensures the extracted solute concentrates in the target phase for easy recovery and analysis.
Q3: How does solubility determine which phase a solute partitions into during extraction?
