The open craniotomy is an essential neuro-surgical procedure, which involves the surgical removal of a part of the bone from the skull to access the brain for surgery. In modern healthcare, neurosurgeons use open craniotomy for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in various types of brain lesions, ranging from tumors, aneurysm, hematomas, and trauma. Even with the evolving endovascular neurosurgery and radiosurgery, craniotomy remains the primary tool for treating the majority of neurosurgical pathologies.
Depending on intracranial lesion and pathology, craniotomies can vary in size and complexity by utilizing different surgical approaches. Since the fundamental rule in neurosurgery is to gain maximal surgical exposure through bone removal, becoming proficient with standard open craniotomies or a combination of craniotomy and craniectomy is extremely important for neurosurgeons.
However, mastering the craniectomy for optimal patient outcomes remains hindered by the long learning curve, lack of high-quality literature, and poor standardization of the procedure.
This collection aims to present a set of open craniotomies within the field of neurosurgery, including classic procedures and innovative techniques and technologies to common clinical scenarios.
