Prof. Pugh is Deputy Head of the School of Life Sciences at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, UK. His research programme involves studying signalling pathways in platelets, and is particularly interested in the role of zinc as both an intracellular second messenger and an extracellular platelet agonist. Prof. Pugh received his BSc in Biology from the University of Southampton, UK, and obtained his PhD from the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London. During his PhD, he was supervised by Prof. Alan Williams on a project which investigated the pore structure of the ryanodine receptor, a calcium channel involved in excitation contraction coupling in cardiac myocytes. Following his PhD, he was employed as a postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Babraham Institute, Cambridge, before moving to the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Cambridge, in the laboratory of Prof. Richard Farndale. During this time, he worked on platelet collagen receptors and their role in regulating platelet adhesion and activation under haemodynamically relevant blood flow conditions.
