Dr. med. Johannes Heinzel is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Hand-, Plastic, Reconstructive, and Burn Surgery at the BG Unfallklinik Tübingen (University of Tübingen) since 2020. Johannes earned his medical degree from the Medical University of Vienna in 2019, having conducted parts of his studies at the University of Heidelberg (Germany), the University of Stellenbosch (South Africa), and the University of Pennsylvania (USA). Since the beginning of his studies in 2012, he has been deeply intrigued by peripheral nerve surgery and neuroregeneration, which was also the topic of his doctoral thesis. From 2015 until 2020, he has been a research associate at the Ludwig Boltzmann for Traumatology in Vienna, working on in vivo studies of peripheral nerve repair and regeneration. He is an expert in microsurgical nerve repair in rat models and evaluation of functional recovery following nerve injury in rodents, especially automated gait analysis.
