Perspectives on Social Psychology

Het veld van de sociale psychologie gaat echt over de kern van onze aard, namelijk dat mensen sociale dieren zijn. We bestuderen hoe de sociale context onze acties, gedachten en gedrag beïnvloedt, en we doen dat door verschillende lenzen. We bestuderen alles, van echte interpersoonlijke interacties in het laboratorium tot het gedrag van tienduizenden of honderdduizenden mensen die gelijktijdig online met elkaar interacteren, en dit geeft ons inzicht in waarom mensen zich bezighouden met de dingen die ze doen. 
Studenten in sociale psychologie hebben de neiging om dol te zijn op de cursus. Ze zijn echt dol op het zien van de wetenschappelijke methode toegepast op de belangrijke vragen die hun eigen leven domineren. De uitdaging zit hem in het begrijpen van de fijne kneepjes van de wetenschappelijke methode en analyse. En een van de dingen die deze video's zullen doen, is het transparanter maken voor studenten in klassen over de hele wereld. Een laatste uitdaging is dat we onszelf bestuderen, en mensen reageren op de experimentele situatie. Dit feit maakt sociale psychologie tot een van de moeilijkste wetenschappen. 
Deze verzameling video's is een heel krachtig hulpmiddel om enkele van deze onderwijsuitdagingen te overwinnen. Het eerste dat het doet, is dat het de methoden die achter de lesboekles zitten heel transparant maakt, zodat je kunt zien hoe mensen precies de sociale context hebben gemanipuleerd om een bepaald gedrag te veroorzaken. Het andere is dat het transparant is voor onderzoekers die soortgelijke studies in de toekomst willen uitvoeren, en dus voor studenten en onderzoekers die voor het eerst in het veld komen of zelfs al vele jaren in het veld zijn, is deze verzameling video's een heel belangrijke bron, niet alleen voor studenten, maar ook voor onderzoekers die meer willen weten over hoe het onderzoek en de wetenschap zijn uitgevoerd. 
Het veld van de sociale psychologie blijft enkele van de belangrijkste vragen blijven aanpakken waarmee de mensheid vandaag de dag wordt geconfronteerd. Van hoe om een positieve relatie te onderhouden met iemand van wie we houden tot het verminderen van onoplosbare intergroepsconflicten tussen twee machtige naties, en uiteindelijk zelfs het verminderen van dingen die dicht bij ons staan, zoals vooroordelen, stereotypen en discriminatie. Het veld evolueert eigenlijk op veel manieren. We gebruiken complexere en krachtigere methoden dan ooit tevoren, inclusief tools uit de psychofysiologie en neurowetenschap, evenals velden als genetica, en tenslotte inclusief big data-technieken, zoals het analyseren van het gedrag van sociale media van honderdduizenden mensen in realtime. 
Een vraag die ik krijg gesteld, gaat over de nauwkeurigheid van de wetenschap achter sociale psychologie. Hoeveel kunnen we onze bevindingen en de literatuur over deze belangrijke kwesties vertrouwen? Ik ben eigenlijk ongelooflijk optimistisch over het veld van de sociale psychologie. Sociaal psychologen staan eigenlijk aan de voorhoede van het verbeteren van niet alleen onze eigen wetenschap, maar ook van wetenschappelijke praktijken in andere vakgebieden. We begrijpen een ongelooflijke hoeveelheid over menselijk sociaal gedrag, onze eigen vooroordelen en valse veronderstellingen, en we hebben de technologie om ze te repareren. 
Nou, er zijn een aantal belangrijke vorderingen. Een daarvan is natuurlijk onze methodologische toolbox. We hebben meer methoden dan ooit om de menselijke sociale dieren te begrijpen. Een andere grote vooruitgang is ons vermogen om technologie te gebruiken om wetenschap te verbeteren en te delen. Social psychology examines how social situations shape people’s actions, thoughts, and attitudes. It uses the scientific method to study everyday interactions between people who may be near each other, far apart, or even online. This makes the field especially useful for understanding behavior in modern life.

Some social psychology studies focus on ostracism, or social exclusion. The ostracism video shows a way to make people feel left out without any direct face-to-face contact. These kinds of experiments help researchers see how people react to exclusion in controlled settings.

The collection also shows why social psychology experiments can be difficult to run. Human responses can change in many ways, which makes the research process more complicated. By showing the methods behind classic experiments, the videos give students and scientists a clear view of how researchers change social context to bring out certain behaviors, including ones people may not notice in themselves.

One example is the Implicit Association Test, or IAT. This test measures unconscious attitudes, such as racial prejudice, for sensitive topics. The collection provides a strong starting point for learning social psychology and points toward future work that may connect the field with neuroscience and big data from social media.
