Adhesion

- [Instructeur] Adhesie ontstaat wanneer twee verschillende moleculen door elkaar worden aangetrokken, zoals water dat aan het grassprietje vastzit. Dit komt omdat het oppervlak van het gras polair is. Wanneer het oppervlak een verticale buis is, veroorzaakt het een opwaartse trekkracht aan de randen, een holle meniscus.

Als de adhesiekracht sterker is dan de cohesieve aantrekkingskracht tussen de watermoleculen, zal het water blijven stijgen, een beweging die bekend staat als capillaire werking. Net als de smalle buis bevatten planten smalle vaten, xyleem genaamd, die bestaan uit polaire cellulose. Ze transporteren water omhoog door capillaire werking tegen de zwaartekracht in.

De diameter van deze vaten neemt af richting de toppen van hogere bomen, waardoor het water nog hoger kan stijgen, van de wortels tot aan de bladeren.

Bijvoorbeeld, wanneer water in een glas wordt geschonken, worden de positief geladen waterstofmoleculen van water meer aangetrokken door de negatief geladen zuurstofmoleculen in de silica, dan door de zuurstof in aangrenzende watermoleculen.

Capillaire werking is het resultaat van de adhesieve neigingen van water. Wanneer een smalle glazen buis in een beker gevuld met water wordt geplaatst, hechten de watermoleculen zich aan het oppervlak van de buis en stijgt het waterniveau in de buis. In planten zorgen adhesie en cohesie ervoor dat watermoleculen van de wortels naar de bladeren kunnen stijgen via transpiratie. Planten bevatten xyleemvaten die uit lange, smalle cellen bestaan, de zogenaamde tracheaire elementen, die water transporteren. Omdat watermoleculen aantrekkingskracht uitoefenen op cellulose, hechten ze zich aan de celwand van het xyleem en weerstaan ze de neerwaartse kracht van de zwaartekracht. Cohesieve krachten tussen watermoleculen zorgen voor aantrekkingskracht tussen de watermoleculen binnen de tracheale cellen. Samen creëren deze dynamische krachten van adhesie en cohesie een kolom van watermoleculen. De adhesie van water aan cellulose is groter dan de cohesieve krachten, waardoor het water van de wortels naar de bladeren kan stijgen.

Water can climb or stick to surfaces because of adhesion, which is the attraction between different kinds of molecules. In water, this is easy to see on polar surfaces such as glass or cellulose in plants. The positive hydrogen side of water is more attracted to the negative oxygen in silica than to nearby water molecules.

This attraction helps explain capillary action. If a narrow glass tube is placed in a beaker of water, water molecules attach to the tube’s surface and the water level rises. The smaller the tube diameter, the higher the water rises because more water molecules contact the glass surface. Capillary action continues while the adhesive force stays stronger than the cohesive forces between water molecules.

Adhesion also helps move water through plants during transpiration. Plants have xylem vessels made of long, narrow tracheary elements that transport water. Water molecules cling to the cellulose in the xylem cell wall and resist gravity. Cohesion, the attraction between water molecules, helps keep the water molecules together inside the tracheary cells. Adhesion and cohesion work together to form a column of water that can move upward from the roots to the leaves.
