- [Instructeur] Fermentatie is een anaëroob proces waarbij suiker wordt gebruikt zonder zuurstof. Bijvoorbeeld, tijdens de melkzuurfermentatie, wanneer de spieren geen zuurstof meer hebben, wordt glucose afgebroken tot twee pyruvaatmoleculen tijdens de glycolyse, waardoor twee ATP's worden geproduceerd en twee NAD-moleculen tot NADH worden gereduceerd. Vervolgens reageert de NADH met pyruvaat en vormt tot lactaat, waarbij geen koolstofdioxide vrijkomt en er geen ATP-productie plaatsvindt.

In feite, om dezelfde hoeveelheid ATP te produceren als aërobe ademhaling, moet de cel veel grotere hoeveelheden suiker consumeren. Nadat NADH geoxideerd is, wordt NAD+ teruggebracht naar glycolyse, waarbij ATP wordt gewonnen door de afbraak van glucose. Fermentatie is een metabolisch proces dat plaatsvindt bij afwezigheid van zuurstof, waarbij organische moleculen zoals glucose worden afgebroken om energie te produceren. Tijdens dit proces wordt het glucosemolecuul aanvankelijk via een reeks chemische reacties omgezet in twee pyruvaatmoleculen. Dit proces wordt glycolyse genoemd en is dezelfde eerste stap als bij aërobe ademhaling. Bij afwezigheid van zuurstof worden de pyruvaatmoleculen vervolgens via verschillende routes omgezet in organische moleculen, afhankelijk van het betrokken organisme.

Een belangrijk aspect van fermentatie is de regeneratie van NAD+ uit NADH. Tijdens glycolyse wordt NAD+ omgezet in NADH, en het voortgezette functioneren van glycolyse vereist de regeneratie van NAD+. Bij afwezigheid van zuurstof is fermentatie het proces dat NAD+ regenereert, door elektronen van NADH over te dragen naar een organisch molecuul, zoals pyruvaat, wat resulteert in de vorming van een nieuw organisch molecuul en NAD+.

Er zijn twee hoofdtypen fermentatie, gebaseerd op de eindproducten van de reactie: melkzuurfermentatie en alcoholfermentatie. Bij zoogdieren vindt melkzuurfermentatie plaats in de rode bloedcellen, die niet aëroob kunnen ademen vanwege het ontbreken van mitochondriën, en ook in de skeletspieren tijdens zware inspanning. Alcoholfermentatie is een proces in twee stappen. In de eerste stap wordt pyruvaat omgezet in CO2 en aceetaldehyde. In de tweede stap fungeert aceetaldehyde als een elektronenacceptor en wordt het gereduceerd tot ethanol, met een gelijktijdige omzetting van NADH in NAD+. NADH om in ethanol, CO2 en NAD+. Fermentation is a metabolic pathway that lets cells make energy without oxygen. It begins after glucose is split into two pyruvate molecules during glycolysis. Glycolysis is the same first step used in aerobic respiration.

When oxygen is unavailable, pyruvate does not enter aerobic respiration. Instead, cells convert pyruvate into other organic molecules through pathways that depend on the organism. A key purpose of fermentation is to regenerate NAD+ from NADH so glycolysis can keep running.

During glycolysis, NAD+ becomes NADH. Fermentation transfers electrons from NADH to an organic molecule, such as pyruvate. This reaction produces a new organic molecule and restores NAD+.

The two main fermentation types are lactic acid fermentation and alcohol fermentation. Lactic acid fermentation occurs in red blood cells, which lack mitochondria, and in skeletal muscles during strenuous exercise. It also happens in certain bacteria, including those found in yogurt. In this pathway, pyruvate and NADH are converted to lactic acid and NAD+.

Alcohol fermentation happens in two steps. First, pyruvate is changed into carbon dioxide and acetaldehyde. Then acetaldehyde accepts electrons and is reduced to ethanol, while NADH becomes NAD+. Overall, alcohol fermentation turns pyruvate and NADH into ethanol, carbon dioxide, and NAD+.

Yeasts use alcohol fermentation to convert sugars into carbon dioxide and ethanol. People harness this process to produce alcoholic beverages such as beer and wine. Fermentation shows how cells can keep making energy when oxygen is limited.

EXPLANATION: Discussions of DNA in earlier grades have been limited to discussions of genes and the role of genes in the appearance and activities of an organism. Biology 1 represents a student's introduction to a molecular model of a DNA as well as the organization of DNA into genes and genes subsequently into chromosomes. Students should address interactions between genes in proteins which regulate both the shape and reproduction of DNA molecules. It is important to note that not all segments of DNA are transcribed for proteins. Portions of DNA are involved in regulating the expression of genes or affect the structure of the chromosomes (replication origin, centromeres, and telomeres).
