Nature and Nurture

- [Verteller] Kenmerken als lengte worden niet alleen gevormd door verschillende genen, aangeduid als de invloed van nature. Maar ook door diverse omgevingsfactoren, gezamenlijk nurture genoemd. Bijvoorbeeld, slechte voeding tijdens de kindertijd, zoals een gebrek aan eiwitten, kan de groei van een individu belemmeren, waardoor ze op volwassen leeftijd korter zijn dan ze zouden zijn geweest met betere voeding.

Opvallend is dat verbeteringen in de voeding waarschijnlijk hebben bijgedragen tot een geleidelijke stijging van de gemiddelde lengte sinds het begin van de 20e eeuw, een trend die vooral in bepaalde regio's van Amerika, Europa en Azië zichtbaar is. Er zijn echter ook aanwijzingen dat de emotionele omgeving van kinderen, zoals chronische stress en een gebrek aan socialisatie, het niveau van de groeihormonen in het lichaam verstoort, waardoor deze afnemen, en hierbij de lengte beperken. Dus soms is het de wisselwerking tussen nature en nurture die de uiteindelijke verschijning van een fenotype dicteert, zoals iemands lengte, en zelfs of die persoon later in zijn leven kanker of een hartaandoening krijgt.

Veel menselijke kenmerken, zoals lengte, worden gevormd door zowel de natuur – met andere woorden, door onze genen – als door opvoeding, of onze omgeving. Chronische stress tijdens de kindertijd remt bijvoorbeeld de productie van groeihormonen en vermindert dientengevolge de botgroei en lengte. Wetenschappers schatten dat 70-90% van de variatie in lengte te wijten is aan genetische verschillen tussen individuen, en 10-30% van de variatie in lengte te wijten is aan verschillen in de omgeving waarin individuen voorkomen, zoals verschillen in dieet. Veel andere fenotypes worden op dezelfde manier beïnvloed door zowel genen als omgevingen. Sommige van deze fenotypen ontstaan later in het leven, zoals kanker en andere ziekten.

<h4>De invloed van voeding op de lengte</h4>

Er zijn honderden genen geïdentificeerd die de lengte bij mensen beïnvloeden. Uit één onderzoek bleek dat de belangrijkste factor die de huidige verschillen in gestalte tussen mannen in verschillende landen verklaart, de verhouding was tussen de inname van hoogwaardige dierlijke eiwitten en eiwitten van lage kwaliteit uit granen en groenten tijdens de kindertijd.

Aangenomen wordt dat de langste vroege mannen jagers uit het Boven-Paleolithicum waren, specifiek uit de Gravettiaanse cultuur, die 34.000 tot 26.000 jaar geleden in Europa bloeide. Hun gestalte (variërend van 5'10" tot 6'2") was gedeeltelijk te danken aan een lage bevolkingsdichtheid y een dieet dat rijk was aan hoogwaardige dierlijke eiwitten. In moderne tijden wordt een grotere lengte toegeschreven aan verbeteringen op voedings- en sociaal-economisch gebied.

<h4>De impact van stress op de gestalte</h4>

Fysieke groei is metabolisch veeleisend en wordt geremd door stress, gedeeltelijk via de hypothalamus-hypofyse-bijnier-as. Corticotropine-releasing hormoon (CRH) stimuleert bijvoorbeeld de synthese van adrenocorticotroop hormoon (ACTH), dat de afgifte van glucocorticoïden induceert (bijvoorbeeld cortisol, het ‘stresshormoon’). Cortisol stimuleert de eetlust, maar vermindert de productie van IGF-1 door de lever, wat ook nodig is voor botgroei en ontwikkeling. Bovendien verhoogt een teveel aan glucocorticoïden de afgifte van somatostatine, wat de afgifte van groeihormoon remt.

Bij kinderen is aangetoond dat chronische stress de botgroei en gewichtstoename remt, y beide kunnen weer optreden als de stress wordt verminderd of geëlimineerd. Bovendien kunnen kinderen die worden grootgebracht onder sociaal stressvolle omstandigheden, waarbij te veel kinderen te weinig middelen delen en waarbij zowel aan fysieke als emotionele behoeften niet wordt voldaan, ook een groeivertraging ervaren. Dit is duidelijk zichtbaar bij geïnstitutionaliseerde kinderen die geen sterke, consistente relatie met hun verzorgers ontwikkelen. Daarom kunnen stress, psychosociaal geïnduceerde groeihormoonreductie en ontoereikende voeding allemaal de gestalte belemmeren.

<h4>Een combinatie van natuur en opvoeding</h4>

Omdat mensen verschillende genen erven en groeien, leven en zich ontwikkelen onder verschillende omgevingsomstandigheden, is het belangrijk om te bedenken dat zowel de natuur als de opvoeding de uiteindelijke verschijning van veel fenotypes beïnvloeden, zelfs fenotypes die zich later in het leven kunnen ontwikkelen, zoals kanker of hartziekten.

Genes and environment both shape human height and other traits. Genes are the inherited instructions we get from our parents. Environment includes factors such as diet, stress, and social conditions. Many phenotypes, or observable traits, reflect both influences. Some also show up later in life, including cancer and other diseases.

Height is a clear example of this interaction. Scientists estimate that 70-90% of height variation comes from genetic differences among people. The remaining 10-30% comes from environmental differences, such as diet. Hundreds of genes linked to height have been identified in humans.

Nutrition can strongly affect how tall a person grows during childhood. One study found that the biggest factor in stature differences among men in different nations was the balance between high-quality animal protein and lower-quality protein from grains and vegetables. Early Upper Paleolithic hunters from the Gravettian culture were among the tallest known men. They lived in Europe 34,000 to 26,000 years ago. Their height, from about 5'10&quot; to 6'2&quot;, was helped by a low population density and a diet rich in high-quality animal protein. In modern times, greater height is linked to improved nutrition and social conditions.

Stress can also limit growth. Physical growth uses a lot of energy, and stress can slow it down through the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. In this pathway, corticotropin-releasing hormone, or CRH, stimulates adrenocorticotropic hormone, or ACTH. ACTH leads to the release of glucocorticoids such as cortisol, the main stress hormone. Cortisol can reduce the liver’s production of IGF-1, a factor needed for bone growth, and too much glucocorticoid can increase somatostatin, which lowers growth hormone release.

Chronic stress in children can reduce bone growth and weight gain, and these changes may improve when stress is reduced. Growth delay can also appear when children live in socially stressful settings with too many children sharing too few resources and with unmet physical and emotional needs. This is seen in institutionalized children who do not form strong, steady relationships with caregivers. Overall, genes and environment work together to shape final traits, including features that may develop much later in life.
