Introduction to Cellular Respiration

- [Verteller] Celademhaling is het katabole proces waarbij organische moleculen worden afgebroken om bruikbare energie te creëren via een elektronentransportketen. Dit proces vereist zuurstof in mensen en de meeste andere organismen en produceert koolstofdioxide, water, warmte en bruikbare energie in de vorm van ATP. Hoewel veel verschillende organische moleculen, suikers, aminozuren en lipiden kunnen worden gebruikt in de celademhaling, wordt glucose als prototype gebruikt.

Zo is de vergelijking voor celademhaling C6H12O6 plus zes O2, leidt tot zes CO2 plus zes H20 plus energie, het omgekeerde van fotosynthese. Deze reactie gebeurt in meerdere stappen. Glycolyse treedt op in het cytoplasma, pyruvaatoxidatie en de citroenzuurcyclus komen voor in de mitochondriën, en oxidatieve fosforylering vindt plaats over het binnenste mitochondriale membraan.

Samen drijven deze processen cellulaire activiteiten aan van flagellaire beweging, spiercontractie, tot de afbraak van organische moleculen om ATP te produceren.

Organismen halen energie uit voedsel, maar deze energie kan niet direct door cellen worden gebruikt. Cellen zetten de energie die is opgeslagen in voedingsstoffen om in een meer bruikbare vorm: adenosinetrifosfaat (ATP).

ATP slaat energie op in chemische bindingen die snel kunnen worden vrijgegeven wanneer dat nodig is. Cellen produceren energie in de vorm van ATP via het proces van cellulaire ademhaling. Hoewel een groot deel van de energie uit de cellulaire ademhaling vrijkomt als warmte, wordt een deel ervan gebruikt om ATP te maken.

Tijdens cellulaire ademhaling dragen verschillende oxidatie-reductie (redox) reacties elektronen over van organische moleculen naar andere moleculen. Hier verwijst oxidatie naar elektronenverlies en reductie naar elektronenversterking. De elektronendragers NAD+ en FAD en hun gereduceerde vormen, respectievelijk NADH en FADH2, zijn essentieel voor verschillende stappen van cellulaire ademhaling.

Aërobe ademhaling vereist zuurstof en genereert ATP door glucose en zuurstof af te breken in kooldioxide en water. Sommige prokaryoten gebruiken anaërobe ademhaling, waarvoor geen zuurstof nodig is. Zowel aerobe als anaerobe ademhaling begint met glycolyse, die zonder zuurstof kan plaatsvinden. Glycolyse breekt glucose af tot pyruvaat, waardoor ATP ontstaat. Bij afwezigheid van zuurstof fermenteert pyruvaat, waarbij NAD+ wordt geproduceerd voor voortdurende glycolyse. Belangrijk is dat verschillende soorten gist alcoholische gisting uitvoeren. Menselijke spiercellen kunnen melkzuurfermentatie gebruiken wanneer de zuurstof uitgeput is. Anaerobe ademhaling eindigt met fermentatie.

Aërobe ademhaling gaat echter door met pyruvaatoxidatie. Pyruvaatoxidatie genereert acetyl-CoA, dat in de citroenzuurcyclus terechtkomt. De citroenzuurcyclus bestaat uit verschillende redoxreacties die de bindingsenergie van acetyl-CoA vrijgeven, waardoor ATP en de gereduceerde elektronendragers NADH en FADH2. worden geproduceerd.

De laatste fase van cellulaire ademhaling, oxidatieve fosforylering, genereert het grootste deel van de ATP. NADH en FADH2. geven hun elektronen door de elektronentransportketen. De elektronentransportketen maakt energie vrij die wordt gebruikt om protonen te verdrijven, waardoor een protongradiënt ontstaat die ATP-synthese mogelijk maakt.

De meeste organismen gebruiken aerobe (zuurstofbehoefte) ademhaling, die veel meer ATP produceert dan anaerobe ademhaling.

Cellular respiration is the process cells use to turn energy from food into ATP. ATP, or adenosine triphosphate, stores energy in chemical bonds that can be released quickly when cells need it. Much of the energy released during respiration becomes heat, but some of it is captured to make ATP.

This process depends on oxidation-reduction, or redox, reactions. In these reactions, oxidation means electron loss and reduction means electron gain. The electron carriers NAD+ and FAD, along with their reduced forms NADH and FADH2, play essential roles in several stages of cellular respiration.

Most organisms use aerobic respiration, which requires oxygen and breaks down glucose and oxygen into carbon dioxide and water. Some prokaryotes use anaerobic respiration, which does not require oxygen. Both aerobic and anaerobic respiration begin with glycolysis, and glycolysis can happen without oxygen.

Glycolysis splits glucose into pyruvate and produces ATP. If oxygen is missing, pyruvate undergoes fermentation so NAD+ can be regenerated for continued glycolysis. Yeast carry out alcoholic fermentation, while human muscle cells can use lactic acid fermentation when oxygen is low. Anaerobic respiration ends with fermentation.

Aerobic respiration continues after glycolysis with pyruvate oxidation. This step converts pyruvate into acetyl-CoA, which enters the citric acid cycle. The citric acid cycle uses several redox reactions to release the bond energy of acetyl-CoA and produces ATP, NADH, and FADH2.

The final stage is oxidative phosphorylation, which makes most of the ATP. NADH and FADH2 pass electrons through the electron transport chain. The chain releases energy that pumps protons, creating a gradient that drives ATP synthesis. For most organisms, aerobic respiration produces much more ATP than anaerobic respiration.
