Wanneer elektronen door een draad stromen, of ionen door een oplossing stromen, wekken ze elektriciteit op. Deze elektronenstroom, of meer specifiek elektrische lading, wordt gedefinieerd als een elektrische stroom. Maar waardoor stromen de elektronen?Denk aan een redoxreactie tussen koper en zink. Wanneer een zinkelektrode in een koperionenoplossing wordt geplaatst, worden elektronen van de ene stof naar de andere overgebracht. Zink, dat een grotere neiging heeft om elektronen te verliezen, wordt geoxideerd tot zinkionen, terwijl koperionen worden gereduceerd tot vast koper.Bij deze reactie stromen elektronen van zink naar koper, maar deze reactie wekt geen elektriciteit op. Bedenk nu dat de reactanten, zink en koper, fysiek gescheiden en verbonden zijn via een externe geleider, zoals een draad. De neiging van de reactanten om elektronen te winnen of te verliezen, blijft bestaan, waardoor de elektronen door de draad stromen, die de twee halfreacties met elkaar verbindt.Deze elektronenstroom vormt een elektrische stroom en kan elektrische apparaten, zoals een gloeilamp, aandrijven. Elektrische stroom wordt gemeten in ampère. Eén ampère is gelijk aan de stroom van één coulomb elektrische lading per seconde, wat overeenkomt met 6, 24 10¹⁸ elektronen per seconde.De stroom van elektrische stroom is vergelijkbaar met water dat door een waterval stroomt. Het water wordt aangedreven door het verschil in potentiële zwaartekracht, terwijl de elektronenstroom wordt aangedreven door het verschil in elektrische potentiële energie tussen de reactanten. Dit verschil in elektrische potentiële energie wordt beschreven door de termen potentiaalverschil, elektromotorische kracht of celpotentiaal.Het celpotentiaal is een maat voor de drijvende kracht tussen twee reactanten en de neiging tot elektronenoverdracht. Het celpotentiaal van twee geïsoleerde reactanten wordt gemeten met een voltmeter, die wordt afgelezen in celspanning. Elektriciteit wordt gegenereerd door elektronen of ionen die door een oplossing of een geleidend medium stromen. Er kan aan worden gedacht aan het feit dat bij een redoxreactie elektronen verloren en gewonnen worden. Elektrische stroom en hoe elektronen stromen Elektronenoverdracht vindt rechtstreeks plaats van een reductiemiddel naar een oxidatiemiddel in een oplossing. Zelfs als de componenten van halfreacties fysiek geïsoleerd zijn in afzonderlijke vaten en verbonden zijn via een externe geleider zoals een draad, blijft de neiging om elektronen te verliezen en te winnen door de reactanten bestaan. Nu worden elektronen echter gedwongen door de draad te stromen die de twee halfreacties verbindt. Deze elektronenstroom door de draad vormt een elektrische stroom en kan elektronische apparaten, zoals een gloeilamp, van stroom voorzien. Elektrische stroom wordt gemeten in ampère. Een koperdraad ondergaat bijvoorbeeld spontane oxidatie door zilver(I)-ionen, maar levert geen enkele reactie op wanneer deze wordt ondergedompeld in een oplossing van lood(II)-ionen. Dit komt door het verschil in de redoxactiviteit van de twee soorten, Ag+ (aq) en Pb2+ (aq), ten opzichte van koper: het zilverion oxideert spontaan koper, maar het loodion niet. Dit verschil in redoxreactiviteit in de elektrochemie kan worden gekwantificeerd met behulp van de term ‘celpotentieel’; ook wel bekend als ‘spanning’. Electromotive Force

Electric current is the flow of electric charge through a conducting medium or a solution. In wires, that charge is carried by electrons. In some solutions, ions can also move and carry charge. When electrons move through a wire, they produce an electric current.

This idea connects to redox reactions, where electrons are lost and gained. In the spontaneous reaction between zinc and copper ions, zinc is oxidized to zinc ions. Copper ions are reduced to solid copper. Even so, this direct reaction does not generate useful electricity.

Electricity is produced when the half-reactions are separated into different vessels and linked by an external wire. The tendency for electrons to move from the reducing agent to the oxidizing agent still remains. But now the electrons must travel through the wire instead of moving directly in solution. That forced movement is an electric current, and it can power devices such as a light bulb.

Electric current is measured in amperes. One ampere means one coulomb of charge moves each second. That is equal to about 6.24 × 10^18 electrons per second. Since one electron has a charge of 1.602 × 10^-19 C, the ampere gives a direct measure of electron flow.

The flow of current depends on a driving force, much like water flowing down a waterfall. Water moves because of a difference in gravitational potential energy. Electrons move because of a difference in electrical potential energy between the reactants. This difference is called potential difference, electromotive force, or cell potential.

Electromotive force, or emf, describes the driving force between two reactants and their tendency to transfer electrons. Some redox reactions are spontaneous, but others are not. For example, copper wire is oxidized spontaneously by silver(I) ions, but it does not react with lead(II) ions. That difference shows that silver ions and lead ions do not have the same redox reactivity toward copper.

Cell potential is another name for this redox driving force, and voltage is a common word for it. A voltmeter is used to measure the cell potential of two isolated reactants. The reading is given in volts. One volt equals one joule of potential energy per coulomb of charge. A high cell potential means a strong driving force and easier electron transfer. The electromotive force also depends on the nature of the reactants, the temperature, and the concentration of ions in the reaction.
