Denk aan twee containers met verschillende vloeistofniveaus. Bij aansluiting stroomt de vloeistof van het hogere naar het lagere niveau. Door de individuele vloeistofniveaus te meten, kan de stroomrichting worden voorspeld.Ter vergelijking:in een galvanische cel helpt het kennen van individuele elektrodepotentialen het oxidatiemiddel, het reductiemiddel en de stroom van elektronen te voorspellen. Hier heeft elke halfcel zijn corresponderende elektrodepotentiaal. De individuele elektrodepotentiaal kan echter niet direct worden gemeten, maar alleen het potentiaalverschil tussen de twee halve cellen.Dus hoe wordt het berekend? Om individuele elektrodepotentialen te bepalen, wordt aan één elektrode een potentiaal van nul toegewezen en worden de potentialen van de andere elektrode relatief daaraan gemeten. De elektrode met een potentiaal van nul is de waterstofelektrode onder standaardcondities, ook wel de standaard waterstofelektrode of SWE genoemd.De SWE wordt bedreven bij 25 graden Celsius en bestaat uit een inerte platina-elektrode die gedeeltelijk is ondergedompeld in 1 molair zoutzuur en wordt blootgesteld aan een stroom waterstofgas van 1 atmosfeer. Wanneer een zinkelektrode op de SWE wordt aangesloten, neemt zijn massa af, wat de oxidatie tot Zn2 ionen aangeeft. Gelijktijdige verhoogde productie van waterstofgas betekent een vermindering van waterstofionen.Zink is dus de anode en SHE de kathode. De standaard elektrodepotentiaal van zink van 0, 76 volt duidt op een grotere oxidatieve potentiaal dan de SWE. Wanneer echter een koperelektrode op de SWE wordt aangesloten, neemt de massa ervan toe naarmate Cu2 wordt gereduceerd tot koper.Daarom is koper de kathode en SWE de anode. Het standaard reductiepotentiaal van koper van 0, 34 volt duidt op een groter reductiepotentiaal dan de SWE. Standaard elektrodepotentialen geven een maat voor oxidaties of reducties die optreden hoe positiever, hoe groter de neiging tot reductie onder standaardomstandigheden.De richting en spontaniteit van een redoxreactie worden bepaald door de individuele standaard elektrodepotentialen te onderzoeken. Een positieve optelling van de elektrodepotentialen impliceert een spontane reactie. Dus voor een koper-zink galvanische cel met zink als anode en koper als kathode en een celpotentiaal van 1, 10 volt vinden beide halfcelreacties spontaan plaats in voorwaartse richting.Ten slotte is de standaard elektrodepotentiaal een intrinsieke eigenschap en wordt deze niet beïnvloed door enige verandering in de stoichiometrie van de halfreactie.

Bij het vergelijken van de reactiviteit van zilver en lood wordt waargenomen dat de twee ionensoorten, Ag+ (aq) en Pb2+ (aq), een verschil vertonen in hun redoxreactiviteit ten opzichte van koper: het zilverion ondergaat spontane reductie, terwijl het loodion dat wel doet. niet.  Wanneer gemeten voor elektrochemische doeleinden, is de celpotentiaal een maatstaf voor de drijvende kracht achter een specifiek type ladingsoverdrachtsprocessen, namelijk de elektronenoverdracht tussen reactanten. De potentiaal van een enkele elektrode of een enkele halfcel kan niet worden gemeten, omdat voor de elektronenoverdracht respectievelijk een donor en een ontvanger, of een reductiemiddel en een oxidatiemiddel nodig zijn. In plaats daarvan kan een halfcelpotentiaal alleen worden gemeten ten opzichte van een andere halfcel. Het is dus alleen mogelijk om het potentiaalverschil te meten tussen twee halfcellen, Ecell, gedefinieerd als

 waarbij Ekathode en Eanode de potentialen vertegenwoordigen van twee verschillende halfcellen die respectievelijk als kathode en anode functioneren. Het standaard celpotentiaal, E°cell, is het celpotentieel gemeten onder standaardomstandigheden van beide halfcellen (d.w.z. concentraties van 1 M, druk van 1 bar, 298 K)

 Om de halfreactiepotentialen eenvoudig te kunnen berekenen, heeft de wetenschappelijke gemeenschap één bepaalde halfcel aangewezen die als universele referentie dient voor alle celpotentiaalmetingen, met een potentiaal van 0 V. Deze halfcel staat bekend als de standaard waterstofelektrode (SHE), en het is gebaseerd op de onderstaande halfreactie:

 Typisch bestaat SHE uit een inerte platina-elektrode die is ondergedompeld in 1 M watergebonden H+, met een stroom borrelend H2-gas bij een druk van 1 bar, gehandhaafd op een uniforme temperatuur van 298 K. De elektrodepotentiaal (EX) voor een halfcel X wordt dus gedefinieerd als de gemeten potentiaal voor cel X, die als kathode fungeert, terwijl de SHE als anode fungeert.

 Onder standaardomstandigheden is de potentiaal van de halfcel X gelijk aan de standaardelektrodepotentiaal, E°X. Omdat de definitie van celpotentiaal vereist dat de halfcellen als kathodes functioneren, worden deze potentialen ook wel standaardreductiepotentialen genoemd. 

 Voorspelling van spontaniteit en de richting van een redoxreactie 

 De cel- en elektrodepotentialen dicteren de spontaniteit van redoxreacties. Er wordt waargenomen dat de spontane reacties een positief celpotentiaal vertonen, terwijl het niet-spontane proces een negatief celpotentieel vertoont. Als de sommatie van de elektrodepotentialen positief is, wordt gezegd dat de reactie spontaan is. Halfcelreacties met een positieve elektrodepotentiaal vinden plaats in voorwaartse richting, terwijl reacties met waarden kleiner dan die van de waterstofelektrode gewoonlijk in de omgekeerde volgorde plaatsvinden. 

 Een sterker oxidatiemiddel vertoont een groter standaardelektrodepotentieel, E°. Omdat de elektrodepotentialen de reductiecapaciteit meten, komt een verhoogde E° overeen met een grotere drijvende kracht achter de reductie van de soort en een beter oxiderend vermogen. E°cell is dus positief wanneer E°kathode > E°anode. 

 Dit in aanmerking genomen, verklaart het waarom koper wordt geoxideerd door zilver, maar niet door lood:

 Voorspelling van het oplossen van metaal in minerale zuren 

 Een van de essentiële toepassingen van de halfcelpotentialen is het begrijpen of een bepaald metaal zal oplossen in mineraalzuur. De meeste zuren zoals zoutzuur lossen metalen op door de reductie van protonen tot waterstofgas en oxidatie van metalen tot hun respectievelijke ionen. In het geval dat zink reageert met zoutzuur, is de reactie spontaan omdat de standaard elektrodepotentiaal van zink lager is dan die van waterstof. Koper reageert echter niet met zoutzuur vanwege de hogere elektrodepotentiaal.

Standard Electrode Potentials

Electrode potentials help predict whether a redox reaction will happen on its own. A redox reaction involves electron transfer. In electrochemistry, the measured value is called cell potential or cell voltage. It shows the energy linked to charge transfer and is measured in volts, where 1 volt equals 1 joule per coulomb.

A single half-cell cannot be measured by itself because electron transfer needs both a donor and a receiver. For that reason, scientists measure the difference between two half-cells. The cell potential, Ecell, is defined from the cathode and anode potentials, and the standard cell potential, E°cell, is taken under standard conditions of 1 M concentration, 1 bar pressure, and 298 K.

To compare half-cells, chemistry uses the standard hydrogen electrode, or SHE, as a zero-volt reference. The SHE uses an inert platinum electrode in 1 M aqueous H+ with hydrogen gas bubbling at 1 bar and 298 K. A half-cell X is measured against the SHE when X acts as the cathode. Under standard conditions, this gives the standard electrode potential, E°X. These values are also called standard reduction potentials because the half-cell is written as a reduction.

The sign of the potential helps show the direction of a redox reaction. A spontaneous reaction has a positive cell potential, while a nonspontaneous one has a negative cell potential. When the sum of the electrode potentials is positive, the reaction is spontaneous. Half-cell reactions with positive electrode potential tend to go forward, and reactions with values below the hydrogen electrode usually go in reverse. A stronger oxidant has a larger standard electrode potential because it has a greater drive to gain electrons.

This idea explains why silver ions and lead ions behave differently toward copper. Silver ion, Ag+ (aq), is reduced spontaneously, but lead ion, Pb2+ (aq), is not. It also helps explain metal dissolution in mineral acids such as hydrochloric acid. These acids dissolve metals by reducing protons to hydrogen gas and oxidizing the metal to its ions. Zinc reacts spontaneously with hydrochloric acid because its standard electrode potential is lower than hydrogen’s, while copper does not react because its electrode potential is higher.
