Een polymeer is een ketting van kleine moleculen, monomeren genaamd, die bij elkaar worden gehouden door covalente bindingen. Organismen kunnen biologische polymeren synthetiseren, of wetenschappers kunnen polymeren in het laboratorium synthetiseren. Natuurlijke polymeren omvatten DNA, het genetische materiaal dat in alle levende organismen wordt aangetroffen, en eiwitten, polysacchariden en lipiden, de bouwstenen van het leven.Kunststoffen zijn enkele van de meest voorkomende synthetische polymeren en omvatten nylon, polyethyleen en teflon. Het proces waarbij monomeren aan elkaar worden gekoppeld om een groter molecuul te vormen, staat bekend als polymerisatie. Monomeren polymeriseren door twee verschillende reactiemechanismen, condensatie en toevoeging.Condensatiepolymerisatie is wanneer twee monomeren met respectievelijk een reactief waterstofatoom en een hydroxylgroep aan elkaar binden, waarbij water als bijproduct vrijkomt. De meeste natuurlijke polymeren worden gevormd door condensatiereacties. Naast polymerisatie worden monomeren met dubbele koolstof-koolstofbindingen aan elkaar toegevoegd om een polymeer te vormen zonder dat er een bijproduct ontstaat door het vrijkomen van atomen.Polymeren die uit hetzelfde type monomeren bestaan, worden homopolymeren genoemd, en polymeren die uit verschillende soorten monomeren bestaan, worden heteropolymeren genoemd. Cellulose, het meest voorkomende natuurlijke polymeer, is een homopolymeer van glucose, terwijl agarose, een polymeer van mariene oorsprong, een heteropolymeer is van galactose en 3, 6-anhydro-L-galactopyranose. Polymeren hebben verschillende structuren, afhankelijk van hun type monomeren.Lineaire polymeren zijn lange ketens van monomeren. Cellulose is bijvoorbeeld een lineair polymeer dat bij elkaar wordt gehouden door bèta-1, 4-glycosidebindingen. Vertakte polymeren hebben ketens die zich van de hoofdketen afsplitsen, zoals amylopectine, een component van zetmeel dat zich vertakt na 24 tot 30 monomeren via alfa 1, 6-glycosidebindingen.Verknoopte polymeren hebben twee of meer ketens die op verschillende punten als een ladder bij elkaar worden gehouden, zoals een synthetisch geconstrueerd siliciumladderpolymeer, of ze vormen een complex netwerk van onderling verbonden ketens, zoals de gel gevormd door pectines in gelei en jam.

Het woord polymeer is afgeleid van de Griekse woorden “poly” wat “veel” betekent en “mer” wat “delen” betekent. Polymeren zijn lange ketens van moleculen die zijn samengesteld uit zich herhalende eenheden van kleinere moleculen, ook wel monomeren genoemd. Ze komen van nature voor, zoals DNA en eiwitten, of kunnen synthetisch worden geconstrueerd, zoals plastics. Ze hebben gevarieerde structurele kenmerken, zoals lineaire ketens, vertakte ketens of complexe netwerken, die bijdragen aan de eigenschappen die ze vertonen. Bovendien definiëren functionele groepen die op een polymeer aanwezig kunnen zijn, hun eigenschappen verder. De individuele eenheden van een polymeer worden bij elkaar gehouden door stabiele covalente bindingen die ontstaan door additie- of condensatiepolymerisatie. Additie polymerisatie Additie polymerisatie vindt plaats wanneer de monomeren die aan de reactie deelnemen dubbele bindingen hebben. Deze reactie vereist de aanwezigheid van een extern molecuul dat een ongepaard valentie-elektron heeft om de reactie te initiëren. Dit ongepaarde elektron is zeer reactief en vormt een binding met een van de dubbele bindingen in een monomeer, wat ertoe leidt dat het monomeer een ongepaard valentie-elektron heeft. Dit ongepaarde valentie-elektron associeert zich vervolgens met een ander monomeer met dubbele bindingen, wat leidt tot een kettingreactie waarbij het molecuul andere monomeren met dubbele bindingen eraan blijft toevoegen. Dit resulteert in de vorming van een keten van monomeren, waarbij de meest recent toegevoegde keten een ongepaard valentie-elektron heeft. Deze additiereactie gaat door totdat twee ketens met ongepaarde elektronen met elkaar reageren om een binding te vormen. Dit elimineert alle ongepaarde valentie-elektronen, wat resulteert in de beëindiging van de reactie. Condensatiepolymerisatie Voor condensatiepolymerisatie, ook wel stapgroeipolymerisatie genoemd, is een katalysator nodig, zoals een zuur of een enzym, en de monomeren moeten ten minste twee reactieve functionele groepen hebben, zoals aminen of carbonzuren. Functionele groepen op monomeren reageren met elkaar om bindingen te vormen, zoals ester- of amidebindingen, en gaan gepaard met het verlies van een klein molecuul, zoals water. Condensatiepolymerisatie is een langzamere reactie vergeleken met additiepolymerisatie en vereist in veel gevallen de aanwezigheid van warmte. Polymers are long chains of molecules made from repeating units called monomers. The word polymer comes from the Greek words &quot;poly,&quot; meaning many, and &quot;mer,&quot; meaning parts. Polymers can be found in nature, such as DNA and proteins, or made synthetically, such as plastics.

A polymer’s shape helps define its properties. Some polymers form linear chains, while others are branched or arranged in complex networks. Functional groups on a polymer also affect how it behaves. The repeating units in a polymer are held together by stable covalent bonds.

Polymers can form through addition polymerization or condensation polymerization. Addition polymerization happens when monomers with double bonds react in the presence of an external molecule with an unpaired valence electron. That unpaired electron starts a chain reaction as monomers keep joining one after another. The reaction ends when two chains with unpaired electrons bond together and no unpaired electrons remain.

Condensation polymerization is also called step-growth polymerization. It needs a catalyst, such as an acid or an enzyme, and monomers must have at least two reactive functional groups, such as amines or carboxylic acids. These groups react to make linkages like esters or amides, and a small molecule such as water is lost. This process is slower than addition polymerization and often requires heat.
