Recall that primary arylamines, upon diazotization, yield arenediazonium salts as synthetically useful intermediates. The diazonium group is a good leaving group and can be used to generate substituted benzenes.
For instance, in the Sandmeyer reaction, arenediazonium salts are treated with copper(I) salts of halide or cyanide to form aryl halides and aryl nitriles, respectively.
Aryl nitriles can be further hydrolyzed to yield carboxylic acids.
However, using Sandmeyer reactions, direct installation of fluorine and iodine on an aromatic ring is not possible as fluorine reacts violently while iodine reacts very slowly.
For fluorination, the arenediazonium salts are treated with HBF4 acid to generate aryl fluoride via Schiemann reactions.
For iodination, treatment with KI results in the formation of aryl iodide.
Overall, the general sequence to synthesize substituted benzenes involves nitration of benzene, followed by reduction to yield amino benzenes that can undergo diazotization and finally substitution.

Arenediazoniumsubstitutiereacties treden op wanneer de diazoniumgroep wordt gesubstitueerd door verschillende functionele groepen zoals halogeniden, hydroxyl, nitril, enz. Arenediazoniumzouten reageren bijvoorbeeld met koper (I) zouten van chloride, bromide of cyanide om overeenkomstige arylchloriden, bromiden en nitrillen te vormen. Deze reacties worden Sandmeyer-reacties genoemd. Hoewel het mechanisme van deze reactie gecompliceerd is, zoals geïllustreerd in figuur 1, wordt aangenomen dat ze verlopen via een arylkopertussenproduct.

 De hydrolyse van arylnitrillen tot carbonzuren is zeer eenvoudig. In deze context speelt de Sandmeyer-reactie een cruciale rol bij het omzetten van arylaminen in gesubstitueerd benzonitril, zoals weergegeven in figuur 2.

 Sandmeyer-reacties worden niet gebruikt om arylfluoriden en aryljodiden te bereiden. Voor arylfluoriden reageren de arenediazoniumzouten met fluorboorzuur, waardoor diazoniumfluorboraat ontstaat in de vorm van een neergeslagen zout. Zoals weergegeven in Figuur 3 worden deze residuen geïsoleerd, gedroogd en verwarmd totdat ze ontleden en de overeenkomstige arylfluoriden vormen. Zulke reacties worden Schiemann-reacties genoemd. Op dezelfde manier reageren arenediazoniumzouten met kaliumjodide om aryljodiden te vormen.

Arenediazonium salts can be used to make substituted aromatic compounds. In these reactions, the diazonium group is replaced by other functional groups such as halides, hydroxyl, and nitrile. The transcript focuses on how this chemistry is used to form aryl chlorides, bromides, fluorides, iodides, and nitriles.

When arenediazonium salts react with copper(I) salts of chloride, bromide, or cyanide, they form the corresponding aryl chloride, aryl bromide, or aryl nitrile. These are called Sandmeyer reactions. The exact mechanism is complex, but it is thought to proceed through an aryl copper intermediate.

Aryl nitriles are especially useful because they can be hydrolyzed to carboxylic acids very easily. For that reason, the Sandmeyer reaction is an important route from aryl amines to substituted benzonitriles. This makes it a practical step in aromatic synthesis.

Sandmeyer reactions are not used to make aryl fluorides or aryl iodides. To form aryl fluorides, the arenediazonium salt reacts with fluoroboric acid to give diazonium fluoroborate as a precipitated salt. The solid is then isolated, dried, and heated until it decomposes to form the aryl fluoride. This process is called the Schiemann reaction. Arenediazonium salts can also react with potassium iodide to form aryl iodides.
