Sulfonyl chloride reacts with primary and secondary amines to produce corresponding substituted sulfonamides, but it does not react with tertiary amines as the amine has no N&#8211;H protons.
The electron-withdrawing sulfonyl group makes the sulfonamide N&#8211;H proton acidic enough to react with a base to produce a water-soluble salt.
To distinguish between the types of amines, respective amine mixtures in aqueous base are treated with benzenesulfonyl chloride&#8212;also known as the Hinsberg reagent. This is called the Hinsberg test.
A primary amine reacts with benzenesulfonyl chloride to form an N&#8211;substituted sulfonamide precipitate which dissolves in the base to generate a clear solution of a water-soluble salt. Further, the addition of an acid precipitates the N&#8211;substituted sulfonamide.
Similarly, secondary amines react with sulfonyl chloride to give water-insoluble N,N&#8211;disubstituted sulfonamides. Since this has no acidic proton, it stays insoluble in the added base.
Tertiary amines do not react with the Hinsberg reagent and so, no precipitate forms.

 Over het algemeen reageert een primair amine met het Hinsberg-reagens om een N-gesubstitueerd benzeensulfonamide te produceren. De elektronenzuigende sulfonylgroep maakt het N-H-proton zuur, waardoor een gemakkelijke deprotonering in een base mogelijk wordt om een in water oplosbaar zout te vormen. Verdere verzuring van de heldere oplossing resulteert in het neerslaan van een N-gesubstitueerd benzeensulfonamide.


 Secundaire aminen genereren een onoplosbaar  N,N-digesubstitueerd sulfonamide  bij reactie met benzeensulfonylchloride. Door het ontbreken van een N–H -proton reageert de verbinding niet met de base. Tertiaire aminen reageren niet met het Hinsberg-reagens. Bij verzuring worden tertiaire aminen echter geprotoneerd en worden ze in water oplosbaar.

The Hinsberg test identifies primary, secondary, and tertiary amines by their reaction with benzenesulfonyl chloride, also called the Hinsberg reagent. It is named after Oscar Hinsberg. The test uses excess aqueous base, and the mixture is then acidified to show different results for each amine type.

A primary amine reacts with the Hinsberg reagent to form an N-substituted benzenesulfonamide. The sulfonyl group pulls electron density away and makes the N-H proton acidic. Because of this, base can remove that proton and form a water-soluble salt. When the solution is acidified again, the N-substituted benzenesulfonamide precipitates.

A secondary amine gives an insoluble N,N-disubstituted sulfonamide after reaction with benzenesulfonyl chloride. This product has no N-H proton, so it does not react with the base. A tertiary amine does not react with the Hinsberg reagent at first. After acidification, however, the tertiary amine is protonated and becomes water-soluble.
