Amines are organic derivatives of an inorganic compound&#8211;ammonia, with one or more hydrogens being replaced with alkyl or aryl groups.
They are classified as primary, secondary, or tertiary amines based on the degree of substitution at the nitrogen atom.
If the nitrogen atom is bonded to one or more alkyl carbons, the amine is classified as an aliphatic amine. If one of the bonded carbons is part of an aryl group, the amine is an aromatic amine.
Amines in which nitrogen is part of a ring structure are called heterocyclic amines. If the ring is aromatic, such amines are classified as heterocyclic aromatic amines.
The nitrogen atom can also bear four organyl groups. Such amines carry a formal positive charge and exist as quaternary ammonium salts.
Amines occur widely in nature and have various physiological effects. For example, cocaine, a tertiary amine obtained from coca leaves, is a central nervous system stimulant.

Aminen zijn organische derivaten van ammoniak. Ze worden gevormd door één of meer ammoniakprotonen te vervangen door alkyl- of arylgroepen. Afhankelijk van het aantal organylgroepen gebonden aan stikstof, worden aminen geclassificeerd als primair, secundair of tertiair. Primaire aminen hebben één organylgroep bevestigd aan het stikstofatoom, terwijl secundaire en tertiaire aminen respectievelijk twee en drie organylgroepen hebben die aan het stikstofatoom zijn bevestigd.

 Wanneer een vierde organylgroep aanwezig is, bezit de stikstof een formele positieve lading. Zulke aminen bestaan als quaternaire ammoniumzouten.

 Aminen worden ook geclassificeerd als alifatische en aromatische aminen. Een amine is alifatisch als alleen alkylgroepen aan het stikstofatoom gebonden zijn. In een aromatisch amine is ten minste één arylgroep gebonden aan het stikstofatoom. Als het stikstofatoom deel uitmaakt van een ring, worden zulke aminen geclassificeerd als heterocyclische aminen. Verder worden, als stikstof een heteroatoom is in een alifatische ring, dergelijke aminen geclassificeerd als heterocyclische alifatische aminen. Op dezelfde manier wordt een amine geclassificeerd als heterocyclisch aromatisch amine als de stikstof deel uitmaakt van de aromatische ring.


 Stikstofhoudende moleculen van plantaardige oorsprong staan bekend als alkaloïden. De meeste van hen zijn fysiologisch actief in het menselijk lichaam. Inname van coniine, een heterocyclisch alifatisch amine, kan bijvoorbeeld in ernstige gevallen leiden tot ademhalingsproblemen, zwakte of de dood. Amines are organic derivatives of ammonia. They form when one or more ammonia protons are replaced by alkyl or aryl groups. Chemists sort amines by the number of organyl groups attached to the nitrogen atom.

Primary amines have one organyl group on nitrogen. Secondary amines have two, and tertiary amines have three. If a fourth organyl group is present, the nitrogen carries a formal positive charge. These compounds are called quaternary ammonium salts.

Amines are also grouped as aliphatic or aromatic. An amine is aliphatic when only alkyl groups are bonded to the nitrogen atom. In an aromatic amine, at least one aryl group is bonded to nitrogen. If the nitrogen atom is part of a ring, the amine is classified as a heterocyclic amine.

Some heterocyclic amines are further divided by the type of ring they belong to. If nitrogen is the heteroatom in an aliphatic ring, the compound is a heterocyclic aliphatic amine. If nitrogen is part of an aromatic ring, it is a heterocyclic aromatic amine.

Many nitrogen-containing molecules from plants are called alkaloids. Most of these are physiologically active in the human body. Coniine is one example of a heterocyclic aliphatic amine, and ingestion can cause respiratory issues, weakness, or death in severe cases. Cocaine is a tertiary amine from coca plant leaves, and it stimulates the central nervous system when consumed.
