Nomenclature of Secondary and Tertiary Amines

Secondary and tertiary amines can be symmetrical with identical alkyl groups attached to the nitrogen atom or unsymmetrical when more than one type of alkyl group is present.
In common nomenclature, secondary and tertiary amines are named alkylamines. For symmetrical amines, prefixes, di- and tri- are used. In the case of unsymmetrical amines, individual substituents are identified and listed alphabetically.
In the IUPAC nomenclature, the amines are named N-alkylalkanamines.
To assign the IUPAC name, identify the alkyl groups attached to the nitrogen atom. Next, select the longest chain as the parent, while the other alkyl groups are listed as substituents.
Now, number the parent chain by assigning the lowest number to the carbon atom bearing nitrogen.
Assign locants to each substituent. The letter N is used as a locant for the alkyl groups attached to the nitrogen atom.
Finally, assemble the name and specify the configuration of the chiral center, if present, at the beginning of the name.

Secundaire en tertiaire aminen kunnen symmetrisch zijn met identieke alkylgroepen gebonden aan het stikstofatoom of asymmetrisch wanneer er meer dan één type alkylgroep aanwezig is. De standaardnomenclatuur van secundaire en tertiaire aminen is vergelijkbaar met de namen die aan de primaire aminen worden gegeven. Ze worden over het algemeen alkylaminen genoemd. Zoals weergegeven in figuur 1 worden voor symmetrische secundaire en tertiaire aminen respectievelijk de voorvoegsels di- en tri- gebruikt. Aan de andere kant worden in het geval van asymmetrische aminen individuele substituenten geïdentificeerd en alfabetisch gerangschikt.

In de IUPAC-nomenclatuur worden de secundaire en tertiaire aminen N-alkylalkanaminen genoemd. De IUPAC-naam voor een structuur wordt toegewezen via het volgende protocol:


Identificeer eerst de alkylgroepen die aan het stikstofatoom zijn bevestigd.

Secondary and tertiary amines are ammonia derivatives with two or three hydrogen atoms replaced by alkyl groups. They may be symmetrical, with the same alkyl groups attached to nitrogen, or unsymmetrical, with more than one kind of alkyl group present.

These compounds are often named as alkylamines in standard naming. For symmetrical secondary and tertiary amines, the prefixes di- and tri- are used. For unsymmetrical amines, each substituent is named and listed in alphabetical order.

IUPAC naming uses the form N-alkylalkanamine for secondary and tertiary amines. To build the name, first identify the alkyl groups attached to nitrogen. Then choose the longest chain as the parent and number it so the carbon bonded to nitrogen gets the lowest possible number.

Next, assign locants to the substituents. Use the letter N to show alkyl groups attached directly to the nitrogen atom. If a chiral center is present, write its configuration at the beginning of the name.

Quaternary ammonium ions are named in a similar way. The suffix -amine is replaced with -ammonium, and the counterion is added to the name.
