Diabetes Mellitus: Type 2 and Gestational

In Type 2 or insulin-independent diabetes, the insulin receptors on the cells stop responding to insulin, developing resistance to insulin functions. This reduces the cell&#39;s ability to uptake glucose and, as a result, increases the blood glucose levels.
As shown in the table, blood sugar can be measured using different tests. Depending on the cut-off values, a patient is diagnosed as normal, prediabetic, or diabetic.
Type 2 diabetes is common in adults. Lack of physical activity, obesity, poor diet, and a family history are major risk factors.
Similar to Type 1, Type 2 diabetic patients are at risk of heart disease, amputations, kidney failure, and blindness.
Type 2 diabetes is managed through lifestyle changes like diet and exercise, along with medications such as oral antidiabetic drugs and, if needed, insulin therapy.
Gestational Diabetes Mellitus or GDM occurs during pregnancy and can lead to complications such as preterm labor, fetal overgrowth, and preeclampsia.
Although it resolves post-childbirth, GDM mothers and the babies born to them face a lifelong risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and obesity.

Type 2-diabetes, vaker voorkomend bij volwassenen, wordt in verband gebracht met risicofactoren zoals een sedentaire levensstijl, zwaarlijvigheid, slechte voeding en een familiegeschiedenis van de aandoening. Net als bij type 1-diabetes zijn mensen met type 2-diabetes gevoelig voor complicaties zoals hartaandoeningen, amputaties, nierfalen en blindheid.

De behandeling van type I2-diabetes omvat aanpassingen van de levensstijl, waaronder veranderingen in het dieet en regelmatige lichaamsbeweging. Farmacologische behandeling, zoals orale antidiabetica, kan noodzakelijk zijn en in sommige gevallen kan insulinetherapie worden voorgeschreven.

Zwangerschapsdiabetes mellitus (GDM) komt voor tijdens de zwangerschap en kan leiden tot complicaties zoals vroeggeboorte, overmatige groei van de foetus en pre-eclampsie. Hoewel zwangerschapsdiabetes meestal na de bevalling verdwijnt, lopen zowel moeders als hun baby's het risico om gedurende hun hele leven diabetes type 2, hart- en vaatziekten en obesitas te ontwikkelen.

Type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes both involve problems with blood sugar control. In Type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance develops when insulin receptors on cells lose their response to insulin. This lowers the cell’s ability to take up glucose and leaves blood glucose levels high.

Doctors use a series of blood glucose tests to diagnose Type 2 diabetes. These tests show whether blood glucose is in the normal range. If results are abnormal, a patient may be labeled prediabetic or diabetic, depending on how high the glucose level is.

Type 2 diabetes is more common in adults. Risk factors include a sedentary lifestyle, obesity, a poor diet, and a family history of the condition. People with Type 2 diabetes can face serious complications such as heart disease, amputations, kidney failure, and blindness.

Treatment often starts with lifestyle changes. These include diet changes and regular exercise. Some patients also need oral antidiabetic medications, and in some cases, insulin therapy may be prescribed.

Gestational diabetes mellitus, or GDM, develops during pregnancy. It can lead to preterm labor, fetal overgrowth, and preeclampsia. GDM usually resolves after childbirth, but both mothers and babies may still have a lifelong risk of Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and obesity.

The central nervous system is composed of the brain and spinal cord. The peripheral nervous system includes the remaining nervous tissue. A neuron consists of dendrites, a cell body and an axon. Neurons conduct electrical impulses along their membranes and at synapses. Brain cells can detect and sometimes respond to these impulses. Neuroglial cells help to support neural function. The brain consists of three major parts: the cerebrum, cerebellum and brainstem. The cerebrum is divided into lobes and hemispheres. Functions of the cerebrum that may be explored include voluntary muscle control, memory, sensory perception, emotions and speech. The cerebellum is primarily responsible for balance and coordination. The brainstem, a part of the autonomic nervous system, includes structural divisions that perform basic life functions such as breathing and heart rate. The spinal cord is a continuation of the brainstem. The spinal cord is a bundle of nerve tracts that transmits nerve signals between the brain and the body through electrical impulses. Nerves are bundles of neurons that transmit impulses between the peripheral and central nervous systems. The study of nerves can include sciatic, cranial and spinal nerves. Supporting structures of the central nervous system include the meninges and cerebrospinal fluid which protect the central nervous system. Processes of the nervous system are action potential propagation, simple nerve pathways (reflex arc) and neurotransmitter function. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, the effects of drugs, mental illnesses, spinal injuries, concussions, meningitis and multiple sclerosis (MS). Investigations are used to understand and explain the nervous system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications.
