This class includes the order of enteric bacteria &#8212; Enterobacteriales &#8212; containing genera such as Escherichia, Salmonella, and Shigella. The other noteworthy orders are Pseudomonadales and Vibrionales, which contain genera like Pseudomonas and Vibrio.The class Deltaproteobacteria covers eight orders of bacteria with diverse habits. Notably, the orders Bdellovibrionales and Myxococcales contain predatory bacteria such as Bdellovibrio and Myxococcus.Species from the class Epsilonproteobacteria occur primarily in sulfur-rich environments. Proteobacteria are a large and diverse phylum of Gram-negative bacteria. They have an outer membrane that contains lipopolysaccharides. Many of them use different ways to get energy, including phototrophy, chemolithotrophy, and heterotrophy. They live in soil, water, and host-associated environments.

This phylum is divided into six classes: Alphaproteobacteria, Betaproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, Deltaproteobacteria, Epsilonproteobacteria, and Zetaproteobacteria. Each class includes several orders. These groups matter because they include important ecological microbes and human pathogens.

Alphaproteobacteria are often oligotrophic, which means they can live in low-nutrient settings. This class includes many symbionts and pathogens. Rhizobiales includes Rhizobium species that form nitrogen-fixing nodules on legumes. Rickettsiales includes Rickettsia rickettsii, which causes Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Caulobacterales includes Caulobacter crescentus, a model organism for studying cell differentiation.

Betaproteobacteria are metabolically diverse and are found in nutrient-rich environments. Burkholderiales includes Burkholderia cepacia, an opportunistic pathogen in cystic fibrosis. Neisseriales includes Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Neisseria meningitidis, both important human pathogens.

Gammaproteobacteria is the largest class in the phylum. It includes many known pathogens and environmental microbes. Enterobacterales includes Escherichia coli, a model organism, and Salmonella species, which cause foodborne disease. Pseudomonadales includes Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a versatile opportunistic pathogen. Vibrionales includes Vibrio cholerae, the bacterium that causes cholera.

Deltaproteobacteria are often involved in sulfur cycling and predation. Desulfovibrionales includes sulfate-reducing bacteria such as Desulfovibrio desulfuricans. Bdellovibrionales includes Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus, a predatory bacterium. Epsilonproteobacteria are linked to gastrointestinal disease and hydrothermal vent ecosystems. Campylobacterales includes Campylobacter jejuni, a leading cause of bacterial gastroenteritis. Helicobacterales includes Helicobacter pylori, which is associated with peptic ulcers and gastric cancer.

Zetaproteobacteria are mainly found in marine environments, especially iron-rich systems. Mariprofundales includes Mariprofundus ferrooxydans, a bacterium known for iron oxidation in deep-sea habitats. Together, these classes show how Proteobacteria support ecological processes, industrial uses, and human health. Their many adaptations make the phylum biologically important.
