Statics is the study of bodies in equilibrium, and problem-solving in statics involves several steps.
The first step is to formulate the problem. Consider an example of a point load acting on a simply supported beam at a certain distance from one of the supports.
Here, the reaction forces and the bending moment at key points need to be estimated.
Several assumptions are made to solve this problem. Small quantities, like the width of the beam, are neglected compared to large quantities, like its length. Appropriate sign conventions are used to represent the direction of the physical quantities.
For further analyses, free-body diagrams are drawn. They help analyze the forces acting on the beam at a particular section and give the mathematical equations for net force and the bending moment.
The bending moment expression is used to calculate the reaction forces by substituting all the forces and the corresponding distances.
The bending moment at point c is given by the product of Ra and d1.
The results are reported using bending and shear force diagrams.
