The indirect motor pathways control balance, posture, limb movements, and movements in response to visual and auditory stimuli.
The indirect motor pathways originate in the brainstem and consist of the vestibulospinal tract, the reticulospinal tract, the tectospinal tract, and the rubrospinal tract.
The vestibulospinal tract originates in the vestibular nuclei and regulates balance and posture, allowing the body to maintain an upright position.
The reticulospinal tract originates in the reticular formation and consists of the lateral and medial reticulospinal tracts.
The lateral reticulospinal tract inhibits the skeletal muscles of the trunk and proximal limbs, while the medial reticulospinal tract excites them.
Acting together, these tracts maintain balance and muscle tone during ongoing movements such as lifting weights.
Originating in the superior colliculus, the tectospinal tract regulates sudden head and neck movements in response to visual and auditory stimuli. It also controls rapid eye movements.
Emerging from the red nucleus, the rubrospinal tract acts as a supplementary pathway to the lateral corticospinal tract, facilitating precise and voluntary movements of the distal part of the upper limbs.
