Playing tennis, snowboarding, and texting rely on implicit or non-declarative memory, which includes long-term memories that influence behavior through prior experiences without conscious recollection.
Implicit memory can be divided into three subsystems: procedural memory, conditioning, and priming.
Procedural memory involves knowing how to perform tasks and skilled actions, such as brushing teeth or driving a car.
Similarly, conditioning involves automatic learning of associations between stimuli, where one stimulus triggers the response associated with another stimulus.
For example, if someone becomes sick shortly after eating a particular food, they might develop a dislike for it, even if the food wasn't the cause. The negative association prompts them to avoid that food in the future.
Lastly, priming activates stored information to help remember new information more efficiently and quickly.
For instance, after reading words like "ice," "cold," and "frost," when participants are asked to fill in the blank letters in words, they're more likely to fill in "snow" rather than "show" because they've been primed with cold-related words.
