Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Cells

All living things are made up of cells, but do all cells look the same and perform similar functions?

Based on cell structure and function, cells are classified into two main types: prokaryotic and eukaryotic.

Prokaryotic cells, like bacteria and archaea, lack a nucleus, and all prokaryotes are single-celled organisms.

In contrast, eukaryotic cells, present in animals, plants, fungi, and protists, have a nucleus where DNA is stored and protected.

Another difference lies in their structure. Prokaryotic cells are simpler and lack organelles, while eukaryotic cells are more complex, with specialized structures like mitochondria and the Golgi apparatus that perform essential functions.

Despite their differences, they share some key features: a plasma membrane for protection, ribosomes to make proteins, and cytoplasm where cell activities occur.

Prokaryotic cells were Earth’s first life forms. They shaped the planet billions of years ago and remain essential to ecosystems and human health today. Eukaryotes emerged much later in the evolution, enabling a more diverse evolution of more complex and larger organisms.
