Deposition by Streams - I
When a river or stream slows down, it loses the energy to carry its sediments, and they start to settle. Larger sediments, like pebbles and rocks, drop first in steep areas, while smaller sediments, like silt and clay, keep moving until the water slows even more.
In dry regions, a mountain stream can flow onto a flatter area and stop quickly, dropping sediments in a fan-shaped deposit called an alluvial fan.
When a river reaches a large body of still water, like a lake or an ocean, it deposits its sediments in a triangular formation called a delta. The Nile River Delta in Egypt is a great example.
Flooding can also cause deposition. When a river overflows its banks, it spreads out, slows down, and deposits rich soil on the land. Over time, this builds up a floodplain, which is excellent for farming.
Sometimes, when a river floods, it leaves behind raised strips of sediments along its edges. These are called natural levees and can help prevent future floods.
