Circulation in the Atmosphere

Atmospheric circulation refers to the large scale movement of air that helps distribute heat across the planet.

While you can’t see air move, you can feel the wind on your skin and observe trees swaying or flags fluttering.

Wind is simply moving air, and it occurs because the Sun heats different parts of Earth’s surface unevenly.

The troposphere, the lowest layer of the atmosphere, is where most weather events and air movements take place.

When air near the ground warms up, it becomes lighter and rises, creating a low-pressure area at the surface.

As the warm air ascends, it cools at higher altitudes in the troposphere, becomes denser, and sinks back toward the ground, forming a high-pressure area.

This rising and sinking of air creates what’s known as a convection current.

Air moves from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure, and this movement is what we call wind. The greater the difference in pressure, the stronger the wind blows.

These movements of air form global patterns that are part of Earth’s atmospheric circulation system.
