Global Wind Belts - I
Imagine standing on a beach and feeling the breeze. Land and water heat at different rates, causing uneven warming. Now, picture that same process occurring globally; that’s how global winds function.
Global winds are steady air currents that blow across vast areas of the Earth. They are driven by the Sun’s uneven heating of the planet.
At the equator, the Sun heats the air so intensely that it rises, creating a low-pressure zone. In contrast, cooler air sinks at the poles, forming high-pressure zones.
As the warm air rises at the equator, it begins to move toward the poles but cools and sinks around 30 degrees north or south. This circulation forms large loops called convection cells.
These loops are named according to their latitudinal range: Hadley cells from the equator to 30°, Ferrel cells from 30° to 60°, and Polar cells from 60° to 90°.
Global winds play a vital role in moving weather systems and ocean currents. Airlines plan routes to avoid strong headwinds that would slow planes and increase fuel consumption.
