Handheld Observation Device

A handheld observation device is a portable instrument used to visually examine objects, specimens, or experimental materials without relying on a fixed laboratory setup. It works by directing light from or onto a sample and using lenses, optical components, or an electronic sensor to magnify, resolve, or record visible features. In biochemistry, these devices can support rapid inspection of samples, field-based observations, and preliminary assessment of changes such as color, turbidity, or precipitate formation. Their portability can extend observation beyond conventional laboratories, complementing more precise analytical methods and helping researchers and students make timely decisions during experiments.

Handheld Device for Saliva Pretreatment to Improve Cortisol Detection

2026

This protocol describes a rapid saliva pretreatment method for improving cortisol detection. A handheld filtration device is used to remove mucins and other interfering substances while preserving the target analyte. The pretreated saliva exhibits improved capillary flow, thereby enabling more consistent and reproducible assay performance.

Source: Laboratories of Gary Lewandowski, Dave Strohmetz, and Natalie Ciarocco—Monmouth University If you want to know how someone thinks or feels, you can ask that person questions. Another approach is to observe how the person is acting or look for indicators of how they acted in the past. While observations may seem revealing, it isn’t always easy to know if they are truly accurate. For instance, you may see a person smiling and assume they are happy, when in reality they are annoyed and...

Naturalistic Observations

If you want to understand how behavior occurs, one of the best ways to gain information is to simply observe the behavior in its natural context. However, people might change their behavior in unexpected ways if they know they are being observed. How do researchers obtain accurate information when people tend to hide their natural behavior? As an example, imagine that your professor asks everyone in your class to raise their hand if they always wash their hands after using the restroom. Chances...

Source: Jaideep S. Talwalkar, MD, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT Observation and inspection is fundamental to physical examination and begins at the first point of contact with a patient. While observation and inspection are often used interchangeably, observation is a general term that refers to the careful use of one's senses to gain information. Inspection is an act limited to what one can observe visually, and when referring to physical examination,...
