Transcranial Ultrasound

Transcranial ultrasound is the delivery of acoustic waves through the skull to image, stimulate, or alter activity in the brain, making it a valuable noninvasive tool in bioengineering and neuroscience. Depending on frequency, intensity, and focusing, ultrasound can generate mechanical pressure waves that produce localized neuromodulation, imaging signals, or controlled effects on the blood-brain barrier. Researchers use transcranial ultrasound for functional brain mapping, targeted therapeutic delivery, and investigation of neural circuits without implanted electrodes. Advances in acoustic modeling, transducer design, and real-time monitoring are improving targeting through the skull and supporting potential treatments for neurological disorders.

Source: Hage, B. D. et. al., Functional Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound for Monitoring Cerebral Blood Flow. J. Vis. Exp. (2021) This video demonstrates the use of Doppler ultrasound as a functional imaging tool to measure cerebral blood flow velocity, or CBFV in real time. It highlights how frequency shifts in the middle cerebral artery during tasks like breath-holding reveal changes in CBFV, offering insights into brain activity and vascular dynamics.
