High-pressure Homogenizer

A high-pressure homogenizer is a laboratory and processing instrument that reduces cells, tissues, droplets, or particles to a more uniform suspension, making it valuable for biological sample preparation and formulation. It works by forcing a fluid through a narrow homogenization valve at high pressure, where rapid pressure release generates intense shear, turbulence, and sometimes cavitation that disrupts cellular structures and breaks up dispersed phases. In biology, this process supports microbial and mammalian cell lysis, intracellular component recovery, emulsion preparation, and production of nanoscale or submicron dispersions. Control of pressure, temperature, and processing cycles helps balance disruption efficiency with preservation of sensitive biomolecules.

The laser heated diamond anvil cell combined with synchrotron micro-diffraction techniques allows researchers to explore the nature and properties of new phases of matter at extreme pressure and temperature (PT) conditions. Heterogeneous samples can be characterized in situ under high pressure by 2D mapping and combined powder, single-crystal and multigrain diffraction approaches.

Test for Homogeneity

2023

The goodness–of–fit test can be used to decide whether a population fits a given distribution, but it will not suffice to decide whether two populations follow the same unknown distribution. A different test, called the test for homogeneity, can be used to conclude whether two populations have the same distribution. To calculate the test statistic for a test for homogeneity, follow the same procedure as with the test of independence. The hypotheses for the test for homogeneity can be stated as...

Homogeneous Equilibria for Gaseous Reactions

Homogeneous Equilibria for Gaseous Reactions For gas-phase reactions, the equilibrium constant may be expressed in terms of either the molar concentrations (Kc) or partial pressures (Kp) of the reactants and products. A relation between these two K values may be simply derived from the ideal gas equation and the definition of molarity. According to the ideal gas equation: Molar concentration or molarity is given by number of moles divided by the volume: Thus, where P is partial pressure, V...
