Solanum Tuberosum

Solanum tuberosum is the botanical species that includes cultivated potato, an economically important plant studied in biology for its development, genetics, and adaptation. As a herbaceous perennial commonly grown as an annual, it forms underground stolons whose tips expand into tubers when environmental and hormonal signals favor storage-organ development; these tubers accumulate starch and can produce new shoots for vegetative reproduction. Research on S. tuberosum supports studies of plant organ formation, carbohydrate storage, pathogen resistance, and crop improvement, while its clonal propagation and genetic diversity provide useful systems for investigating inheritance, breeding, and responses to changing environments.

The tomato seed is an important model for studying genetics and developmental biology during plant reproduction. This protocol is useful for clearing tomato seeds at different developmental stages to observe the finer embryonic structure.
