Automated Fractionation

Automated fractionation is the programmed separation of a biological sample into defined components, making sample processing more consistent, efficient, and reproducible. Using controlled steps such as centrifugation, filtration, density-based separation, or magnetic sorting, automated systems isolate cells, organelles, biomolecules, or other fractions according to properties such as size, density, or binding affinity. In biology, these workflows reduce manual handling and standardize preparation for downstream analysis, including microscopy, molecular assays, proteomics, and cell-based studies. Automated fractionation also supports higher-throughput research by improving process control, limiting sample-to-sample variation, and enabling systematic comparison across experiments.

Fractional Distillation

2023

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Nicholas Leadbeater — University of Connecticut Distillation is perhaps the most common laboratory technique employed by chemists for the purification of organic liquids. Compounds in a mixture with different boiling points separate into individual components when the mixture is carefully distilled. The two main types of distillation are "simple distillation" and "fractional distillation", and both are widely used in organic chemistry laboratories. Simple distillation...

Automated Acoustic Dispensing for the Serial Dilution of Peptide Agonists in Potency Determination Assays

2016

Peptide adsorption to plasticware during traditional tip-based serial dilutions can significantly impact potency determination and confound the understanding of structure-activity relationships used for lead identification and lead optimization phases of drug discovery. Here methods for automated acoustic non-contact serial dilution of peptide samples are described.
