3d Cell Morphology

3D cell morphology is the study of cell shape, size, and spatial organization within three-dimensional environments, providing a more realistic view of cellular behavior than flat cultures alone. Researchers use microscopy and image reconstruction to analyze cells grown in spheroids, organoids, or extracellular matrix, quantifying features such as volume, surface area, sphericity, branching, and cell-cell arrangement. In cancer research, these measurements help characterize tumor architecture, invasion, heterogeneity, and responses to drugs or other treatments. By linking morphological changes to disease progression and therapeutic effects, 3D cell morphology supports more predictive models of tumor biology and strengthens the evaluation of emerging cancer therapies.

We describe a matrigel plug assay to illustrate angiogenic potential of a pool of factors secreted by cancer cells using two complementary imaging modalities, ultrasound and endomicroscopy. The matrigel, an extracellular matrix (ECM)-mimic gel, is utilized to introduce the host (mouse) with angiogenic factors secreted to the conditioned media...
