Carbon Chain Orientation

Carbon chain orientation is the way a carbon skeleton is arranged and viewed, including the direction used to number its atoms in an organic molecule. In chemical nomenclature, the parent chain is selected and numbered from the end that gives the principal functional group the lowest possible locant, followed by substituents and multiple bonds when applicable. Consistent orientation allows chemists to distinguish constitutional isomers, communicate molecular structures unambiguously, and relate two-dimensional formulas to three-dimensional arrangements. It is essential for naming hydrocarbons and functionalized compounds, interpreting reaction mechanisms, and predicting how chain structure influences molecular properties and reactivity.

Oriented Surfaces

A surface is called orientable if a consistent choice of unit normal vector can be made at every point on the surface. A thin soap film stretched across a wire loop provides a familiar example. The film separates the air on one side from the air on the other, so one side can be selected as positive and the opposite side as negative. Once this choice is made, a unit normal vector can be assigned smoothly across the entire surface. At each point on the soap film, a unit normal vector points...

Electron Transport Chains

The final stage of cellular respiration is oxidative phosphorylation that consists of two steps: the electron transport chain and chemiosmosis. The electron transport chain is a set of proteins found in the inner mitochondrial membrane in eukaryotic cells. Its primary function is to establish a proton gradient that can be used during chemiosmosis to produce ATP and generate electron carriers, such as NAD+ and FAD, that are used in glycolysis and the citric acid cycle. The ETC is comprised of...

The Carbon Cycle

2019

Carbon is the basis of all organic matter on Earth, and is recycled through the ecosystem in two primary processes: one in which carbon is exchanged among living organisms, and one in which carbon is cycled over long periods of time through fossilized organic remains, weathering of rocks, and volcanic activity. Human activities, including increased agricultural practices and the burning of fossil fuels, has greatly affected the balance of the natural carbon cycle. Biological Carbon Cycle All...

Location and Orientation of the Heart

The human heart, despite its modest size and weight, is an organ of remarkable strength and endurance. Roughly the size of a fist, the heart weighs between 250 and 350 grams and is nestled within the mediastinum, the medial cavity of the thorax. It extends obliquely for about 12 to 14 cm, resting on the superior surface of the diaphragm. The heart is positioned anterior to the vertebral column and posterior to the sternum, with two-thirds of its mass lying to the left of the midsternal line.

Biosynthesis of Polyhydroxyalkanoates by Pseudomonas aeruginosa in a Carbon-Rich Medium

2025

Begin with a strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria, isolated from oil-contaminated soil, in a medium containing a nitrogen source and an excess of edible oil as the carbon source. This strain synthesizes polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), a long-chain polymer useful in producing bioplastics.Incubate under agitation to facilitate aeration and promote bacterial growth.Initially, the medium supplies both carbon and nitrogen sources to support bacterial proliferation and generate high biomass.After...
