Cationic Tropone Complex

A cationic tropone complex is a positively charged coordination compound in which a metal center interacts with tropone, a seven-membered conjugated ring containing a carbonyl group. Its properties arise from metal–ligand bonding that can involve the tropone oxygen and, depending on the complex, the surrounding π-electron system, redistributing electron density across the ring and metal center. These interactions influence molecular geometry, aromatic character, stability, and chemical reactivity. Studying cationic tropone complexes helps researchers understand nonclassical coordination modes and electronic structure in organometallic chemistry, while providing insight relevant to ligand design, catalytic reaction development, and the preparation of reactive metal-containing intermediates.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Neal Abrams — SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry Transition metals are found everywhere from vitamin supplements to electroplating baths. Transition metals also make up the pigments in many paints and compose all minerals. Typically, transition metals are found in the cationic form since they readily oxidize, or lose electrons, and are surrounded by electron donors called ligands. These ligands do not form ionic or covalent bonds with the metal center,...

Begin with a bacterial suspension in nutrient media.Add the suspension to a multi-well plate and incubate. The nutrients in the media facilitate bacterial growth and attachment. The adhered bacteria secrete extracellular polymeric substances consisting of polysaccharides, proteins, and DNA to form a layer of biofilm.Wash multiple times with buffer to remove unbound bacteria.Invert the plate to ensure the removal of residual liquid from the well and allow the biofilm to dry.Treat with a fixative...

Cationic Chain-Growth Polymerization: Mechanism

2023

The cationic polymerization mechanism consists of three steps: initiation, propagation, and termination. In the initiation step of the polymerization process, the π bond of a monomer gets protonated by the Lewis acid catalyst, which is formed from boron trifluoride and water. The protonation of the π bond generates a carbocation stabilized by the electron‐donating group. In the propagation step, the π bond of the second monomer acts as a nucleophile and attacks the generated carbocation,...

Enhancing Viral Transduction in Natural Killer Cells Using a Cationic Polymer

2025

This video demonstrates an assay for cationic polymer-mediated viral transduction in natural killer (NK) cells. The cells are incubated with transgenic lentivirus vectors encoding a fluorescent protein. The addition of a cationic polymer enables the virus to attach to the cells and integrate its RNA into the host genome, expressing the fluorescent protein. The fluorescence is quantified to assess the polymer-induced enhancement of transduction.
