Dewar Flask

A Dewar flask is a highly insulated container designed to minimize heat transfer and maintain the temperature of its contents, making it important for storing hot or cryogenic substances in chemistry. Its double-walled structure creates a vacuum between the walls, reducing conduction and convection, while reflective surfaces limit radiant heat exchange; a stopper further restricts gas movement. Dewar flasks are used to store liquid nitrogen, dry ice, and other cryogenic materials, as well as to preserve temperature-sensitive samples and control heat exchange during experiments. Their insulating design supports safer handling, efficient cooling, and reliable temperature-dependent measurements.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Neil Branda — Simon Fraser University Degassing refers to the process by which dissolved gases are removed from a liquid. The presence of dissolved gases such as oxygen or carbon dioxide can impede chemical reactions that utilize sensitive reagents, interfere with spectroscopic measurements, or can induce unwanted bubble formation. A number of different techniques are available for degassing liquids; some of these include heating, ultrasonic agitation, chemical...
