Gold Nanowire Synthesis

Gold nanowire synthesis is the controlled preparation of one-dimensional gold structures with nanoscale diameters and high aspect ratios, enabling properties that differ from bulk gold. In typical chemical approaches, gold ions are reduced to metallic atoms, while seeds, templates, surfactants, or surface-binding ligands regulate nucleation and favor anisotropic growth into elongated wires rather than spherical particles; reagent concentrations, temperature, and reaction time influence their dimensions and uniformity. These nanowires combine electrical conductivity, chemical stability, and nanoscale geometry, supporting applications in nanoelectronics, sensors, catalysis, and plasmonic devices. Reliable synthesis also helps researchers correlate structure with optical, electrical, and catalytic performance.

We report a solution-based method to synthesize substrate-bound Au nanowires. By tuning the molecular ligands used during the synthesis, the Au nanowires can be grown from various substrates with different surface properties. Au nanowire-based nanostructures can also be synthesized by adjusting the reaction parameters.
