Initial Rates Method

The initial rates method is a chemical kinetics technique that determines how reactant concentrations influence reaction speed, helping reveal a reaction’s rate law and mechanism. It measures the rate at the beginning of a reaction, when reactant concentrations are known and products have not accumulated substantially, then compares rates from experiments that vary one reactant concentration at a time. Logarithmic or proportional analysis can identify reaction orders and calculate the rate constant. In chemistry, this method supports quantitative studies of reaction mechanisms, distinguishes competing kinetic models, and provides a foundation for predicting how concentration changes affect reaction behavior.

Initiation of Translation

2020

Initiating translation is complex because it involves multiple molecules. Initiator tRNA, ribosomal subunits, and eukaryotic initiation factors (eIFs) are all required to assemble on the initiation codon of mRNA. This process consists of several steps that are mediated by different eIFs. First, the initiator tRNA must be selected from the pool of elongator tRNAs by eukaryotic initiation factor 2 (eIF2). The initiator tRNA (Met-tRNAi) has conserved sequence elements including modified bases at...

Measurement of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is the gold standard for kidney function assessment. Here we describe a high-throughput method which allows the determination of GFR in conscious mice by using a single bolus injection, determination of fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-inulin in plasma and calculation of GFR by a two-phase exponential decay model.

Reaction Rate

The rate of reaction is the change in the amount of a reactant or product per unit time. Reaction rates are therefore determined by measuring the time dependence of some property that can be related to reactant or product amounts. Rates of reactions that consume or produce gaseous substances, for example, are conveniently determined by measuring changes in volume or pressure. The mathematical representation of the change in the concentration of reactants and products, over time, is the rate...
