Mercury Software

Mercury Software is a crystallographic visualization and analysis program used to examine the three-dimensional structures of molecules and solid materials, making crystal packing and intermolecular interactions easier to interpret. It reads crystallographic structure data and renders molecular arrangements, allowing users to inspect features such as hydrogen bonding, coordination environments, symmetry, and packing motifs; it can also support analyses including powder diffraction pattern simulation. In chemistry, Mercury helps students and researchers connect structural data with molecular geometry and solid-state behavior, assess relationships among related crystal structures, and communicate structural findings in teaching, materials research, and crystallography.

Source: Stenzler, B. R. et. al., An Anaerobic Biosensor Assay for the Detection of Mercury and Cadmium. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)This video demonstrates the use of genetically engineered bacterial biosensors to accurately measure the bioavailable fraction of mercury ions under anaerobic conditions. By varying the concentration of magnesium sulfate, the assay ensures that the biosensor selectively responds to free mercury ions, as indicated by changes in fluorescence intensity.

Neural control and cognitive processes can be studied through eye movements. The VisualEyes software allows an operator to program stimuli on two computer screens independently using a simple, custom scripting language. The system can stimulate tandem eye movements (saccades and smooth pursuit) or opposing eye movements (vergence) or any combination.
