Silver Silver Chloride Electrode

A silver/silver chloride electrode is a reference electrode that provides a stable, reproducible potential for electrochemical measurements in chemistry. It consists of a silver wire coated with silver chloride and immersed in a solution containing chloride ions; the reversible reaction AgCl(s) + e⁻ ⇌ Ag(s) establishes the electrode potential, which depends primarily on chloride activity and temperature. Because its potential remains well defined under controlled conditions, the electrode supports potentiometry, pH measurement, and voltammetry when paired with a working electrode. Its low polarization and practical design also make it useful in analytical chemistry, corrosion studies, and electrochemical sensor systems.
