Mesoporous Structures

Mesoporous structures are solid materials containing regularly arranged pores with diameters of approximately 2–50 nanometers, giving them high surface areas and controllable internal environments. Chemists commonly form these architectures through surfactant or block-copolymer templating, in which molecular assemblies organize precursor species before the template is removed by extraction or calcination. Their adjustable pore size, connectivity, surface chemistry, and composition support selective adsorption, heterogeneous catalysis, molecular separation, and controlled release. Mesoporous silica, carbon, and metal oxides also provide platforms for studying confinement effects and designing functional materials for chemical sensing, energy storage, and environmental remediation.

A label-free optical biosensor for rapid bacteria detection is introduced. The biosensor is based on a nanostructured porous Si, which is designed to directly capture the target bacteria cells onto its surface. We use monoclonal antibodies, immobilized onto the porous transducer, as the capture probes. Our studies demonstrate the applicability of these biosensors for the detection of low bacterial concentrations within minutes with no prior sample processing (such as cell lysis).

2012

We developed a technology based on mesoporous silica thin film for the selective recovery of low molecular weight proteins and peptides from human serum. The physico-chemical properties of our mesoporous chips were finely tuned to provide substantial control in peptide enrichment and consequently profile the serum proteome for diagnostic purposes.

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA It is rare nowadays that a whole year goes by without a major earthquake event wreaking havoc somewhere around the world. In some cases, like the 2005 Banda Ache earthquake in Indonesia, the damage involved large geographic areas and casualties in the six figures. In general, the number and intensity of earthquakes is not increasing, however, the vulnerability of the built environment is...
