Radio Frequency Pulse

A radio frequency pulse is a brief burst of electromagnetic energy used to excite nuclei or other resonant systems at a selected frequency. In nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, the pulse interacts with nuclear spins in a strong magnetic field, changing their magnetization; pulse frequency, duration, and amplitude determine which nuclei are excited and how they generate a measurable signal as they relax. Chemists use radio frequency pulses to obtain chemical shifts, coupling information, and relaxation data, revealing molecular structure, composition, and dynamics. Carefully designed pulse sequences also support multidimensional NMR and improve the analysis of complex mixtures.
