Sample Injection

Sample injection is the controlled introduction of a measured specimen into an analytical instrument for separation, detection, or measurement. In chromatography, an injector transfers a defined aliquot into the mobile-phase stream or carrier-gas flow, where solvent compatibility, injection volume, timing, and mixing determine how efficiently the sample enters the separation system. Manual syringes, autosamplers, and specialized valves support different workflows, from liquid chromatography to gas chromatography. Proper sample injection improves peak shape, retention-time accuracy, sensitivity, and reproducibility, while poor technique can cause band broadening, carryover, contamination, or instrument overload. Understanding injection conditions is therefore essential for reliable quantitative and qualitative chemical analysis.

Gas Chromatography: Sample Injection Systems

In gas chromatography, the sample is introduced as a vapor plug into the carrier gas stream for high efficiency and resolution. A microsyringe injects the sample solution into a heated sample port, vaporizing it and mixing it with the carrier gas. This process is important to ensure the sample is properly prepared for analysis. Thermally sensitive samples can be injected directly into the column and volatilized by slowly increasing the column temperature. Two primary injection methods are used...

After neural tube formation, the neuroepithelium constricts and folds while the tube fills with embryonic cerebrospinal fluid (eCSF) to form the embryonic brain ventricles. We developed this ventricle injection technique to better visualize the fluid filled space in contrast to the neuroepithelial shape in a live embryo.
