Cost Containment

Cost containment is the systematic effort to control healthcare spending while maintaining access, safety, and quality of care. In clinical practice, it works by identifying cost drivers and applying measures such as utilization review, formulary management, care coordination, preventive care, and evidence-based treatment selection. These approaches can reduce unnecessary tests, avoid duplicative services, and encourage efficient use of medications, procedures, and hospital resources. Effective cost containment supports sustainable clinical services, informs health policy and resource allocation, and helps healthcare organizations balance financial constraints with patient outcomes and equitable care.

Costing Methods: Job Order Costing

2026

Job order costing is a cost accounting system used to assign costs to specific and distinguishable jobs or projects. It is ideal for businesses that produce custom products or services, such as those in the construction, film production, and printing industries. Each job has its own unique requirements, which makes a standardized costing approach unsuitable. In this system, a job cost sheet is maintained for every individual project. This document captures all costs related to that job,...

Costing Methods: Process Costing

2026

In industries where large volumes of homogeneous products are manufactured, companies use a process costing system to track production expenses. Unlike job order costing, which allocates costs to individual projects or batches, process costing aggregates costs across departments that perform sequential stages of production. Each department tracks its own direct materials, labor, and overhead costs, which are then summarized in production cost reports. These reports enable businesses to measure...

A fast and inexpensive method for the behavioral determination of hearing parameters like hearing thresholds, hearing impairments or phantom perceptions (subjective tinnitus) is described. It uses pre-pulse inhibition of the acoustic startle response and can be easily implemented in a personal computer using a programmable AD/DA-converter and a piezo sensor.

Source: Laboratories of Nicholaus Noles, Judith Danovitch, and Asheley Landrum—University of Louisville Children have many tools they use over the course of development to learn from adults. Perhaps the earliest tool is imitation, simply copying what they see an adult do or say. However, children actually learn much more effectively than one might expect if they were only imitating. This is because, when it comes to learning and teaching, children and adults have a special relationship.
