Cystotomy

Cystotomy is a surgical incision into the urinary bladder, performed to access its interior for diagnosis or treatment. After the bladder is identified and isolated, a controlled incision through its wall allows clinicians to remove bladder stones or foreign material, obtain tissue samples, or repair selected lesions; the incision is then closed to restore a watertight urinary reservoir. In clinical practice, cystotomy may be performed through an open abdominal approach or with minimally invasive techniques, depending on the patient and procedure. Careful tissue handling and postoperative monitoring help reduce risks such as urine leakage, infection, bleeding, and impaired bladder function.
