End-stage Renal Disease

End-stage renal disease (ESRD) is the most advanced stage of chronic kidney disease, in which the kidneys can no longer adequately remove waste, regulate fluid and electrolytes, or support essential endocrine functions. Progressive nephron loss reduces glomerular filtration, causing uremic toxin accumulation, fluid overload, acid-base disturbances, and complications such as anemia and mineral imbalance. Clinical management focuses on renal replacement therapy, including hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, or kidney transplantation, alongside treatment of contributing conditions and symptoms. Understanding ESRD supports timely referral, individualized treatment planning, and research aimed at improving survival, quality of life, and access to durable kidney replacement options.

Generating an Organ Culture Model to Simulate Early-Stage Intervertebral Disc Disease

2025

This video demonstrates the development of a pro-inflammatory and degenerative organ culture model for early-stage intervertebral disc (IVD) disease using TNF-α. It outlines the procedure for injecting TNF-α into the intervertebral disc and explains the mechanisms through which TNF-α induces inflammation and degradation of the IVD.

2016

Early stage hemodynamic dysfunction is critical to the development of kidney disease. Yet, detection methodologies are limited. Recent advances in sonography provide a noninvasive, accurate option for early detection of kidney injury. This study outlines a step-by-step, sonographic methodology for detecting kidney dysfunction using a drug-induced nephrotoxicity rat model.
