Pancreatic Necrosis

Pancreatic necrosis is the death of pancreatic tissue and surrounding fat, usually occurring as a severe complication of acute pancreatitis. Premature activation of digestive enzymes triggers autodigestion, inflammation, impaired blood flow, and tissue breakdown; the resulting necrotic collections may remain sterile or become infected by bacterial translocation. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography helps identify necrosis and define its extent, while clinical assessment guides monitoring and treatment. Management may include supportive critical care, nutritional support, antibiotics for suspected or confirmed infection, and delayed drainage or minimally invasive necrosectomy when collections cause persistent symptoms or systemic complications. Recognizing pancreatic necrosis is essential for risk assessment and timely intervention.

Necrosis is considered as an “accidental” or unexpected form of cell death that ends in cell lysis. The first noticeable mention of “necrosis” was in 1859 when Rudolf Virchow used this term to describe advanced tissue breakdown in his compilation titled “Cell Pathology”. Morphological Manifestations of Necrosis Necrotic cells show different types of morphological appearance depending on the type of tissue and infection. In coagulative necrosis, cells become anucleated and die, but their...

Source: Chen, Y. et. al., Evaluating Virulence and Pathogenesis of Aeromonas Infection in a Caenorhabditis elegans Model. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)This video demonstrates a muscle necrosis assay in C. elegans (Caenorhabditis elegans) using pathogenic Aeromonas strains. By feeding green fluorescent protein (GFP)-expressing worms on Aeromonas-seeded plates, the assay models bacterial infection and reveals tissue damage through fluorescence imaging. The progressive loss of muscle structure and GFP...

Necrosis is a form of irreversible cell death caused by severe injury such as ischemia, toxins, or trauma. Unlike programmed cell death, it is an uncontrolled, pathological process that typically provokes inflammation in surrounding tissues.Pathophysiologic ChangesNecrosis begins when cells sustain critical damage, leading to swelling of organelles, particularly mitochondria, and rapid ATP depletion. As energy levels decline, membrane ion pumps fail, leading to calcium influx and eventually,...
