Rapid Alternating Movements

Rapid alternating movements are a clinical neurological examination used to assess the speed, rhythm, and coordination of repeated opposing muscle actions. During the test, a patient rapidly alternates movements such as pronation and supination of the forearm or tapping the hands, while the examiner observes for slowing, irregularity, or breakdown of the sequence. Difficulty performing these actions, known as dysdiadochokinesia, can indicate impaired cerebellar control of coordinated movement, although weakness, sensory loss, or other motor abnormalities may also affect performance. The examination provides a quick bedside assessment of motor coordination and supports neurological localization and diagnosis.

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Introduction to C. elegans The nematode (roundworm) Caenorhabditis elegans, commonly known as C. elegans, is a widely used non-vertebrate animal model for studying fundamental biological processes. Because many cellular and...

Alternative RNA Splicing

2020

Alternative RNA splicing is the regulated splicing of exons and introns to produce different mature mRNAs from a single pre-mRNA. Unlike in constitutive splicing where a single gene produces a single type of mRNA, alternative splicing allows an organism to produce multiple proteins from a single gene and plays an important role in protein diversity. There are five types of alternative RNA splicing that vary in the ways the pre-mRNA segments are removed or retained in the mature mRNA. The first...

Eye Movement Monitoring of Memory

Eye movement monitoring (or eye tracking) reveals where in space the eyes linger, when and for how long. Here, we demonstrate how eye tracking can be used to investigate the integrity of memory in multiple participant populations, without requiring verbal, or otherwise explicit, reports.
