Sterile Dacron Swab

A Sterile Dacron Swab is a single-use, sterile specimen-collection device with a polyester fiber tip designed to obtain clinical material while minimizing contamination. During collection, the swab captures microorganisms, cells, or biological secretions from a selected site, and its synthetic fibers can release the specimen into transport media or laboratory reagents for downstream testing. In clinical practice, Sterile Dacron Swabs support microbiological culture, molecular assays, and other diagnostic procedures involving samples from skin, wounds, mucosal surfaces, or body openings. Proper collection and handling help preserve specimen integrity, improve test reliability, and support timely diagnosis and infection-control decisions.

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN In 1959 The 3 R's were introduced by W.M.S. Russell and R.L. Burch in their book The Principles of Humane Experimental Technique. The 3 R's are replacement, reduction, and refinement of the use of animals in research. The use of cell lines and tissue cultures that originated from research animals is a replacement technique, as it allows for many experiments to be conducted in vitro. Harvesting...

(2016)This video demonstrates the quantification of vaginal Group B Streptococcus (GBS) load in a mouse model using swabbing and chromogenic culture. It outlines the steps involved in sample collection, plating, and colony counting to quantify GBS load in the mouse vaginal lumen.

Cleaning, Sterilization, and Disinfection

Cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization are the methods that help to break the infection chain and prevent disease. Cleaning The cleaning process usually involves using water with detergents or enzymatic cleaner and removing foreign material from objects and surfaces, including organic material such as body fluids or inorganic material like soil. Cleaning is performed before high-level disinfection and sterilization because foreign materials on the cover of the devices interfere with process...

Swab-based Conjunctival Commensal Bacteria Isolation: A Technique to Isolate Commensal Bacteria from Conjunctiva of Murine Model
