Aluminum Substrate Reuse

Aluminum substrate reuse is the engineering practice of recovering and reapplying aluminum base materials that have already supported a coating, bonded component, or manufactured part, reducing material demand and waste. The process typically evaluates substrate condition, removes contaminants or residual layers, and restores suitable surface properties through controlled cleaning, treatment, or machining before a second use. Engineers apply this approach in manufacturing, surface treatment, electronics, and component refurbishment when dimensional accuracy and surface quality remain acceptable. Effective reuse can conserve resources, lower processing impacts, and support more circular production systems while requiring careful inspection and performance validation.

Our protocol demonstrates how to pour multiple protein gels at a time by recycling Invitrogen Nupage Novex minigel cassettes, and inexpensive materials purchased at a home improvement store. This economical and streamlined method includes a way to store the gels at 4°C for a few weeks. By re-using the plastic gel cassettes from commercially available gels, labs that run frequent protein gels can save significant costs and help the environment.

Stress-Strain Characteristics of Aluminum

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA Aluminum is one of the most abundant materials in our lives, as it is omnipresent in everything from soda cans to airplane components. Its widespread use is relatively recent (1900AD), primarily because aluminum does not occur in its free state, but rather in combination with oxygen and other elements, often in the form of Al2O3. Aluminum was originally obtained from bauxite mineral deposits...
