Grating Coupler

A grating coupler is an optical device that transfers light between an optical fiber or free-space beam and a planar waveguide, enabling access to integrated photonic circuits. It uses a periodic surface grating to diffract incident light into a guided mode, or to scatter guided light outward; the grating period, etch depth, fill factor, and coupling angle determine phase matching and efficiency. In engineering, grating couplers support wafer-level testing, fiber-to-chip communication, optical sensing, and photonic integrated circuit characterization. Their compact, lithographically fabricated design can simplify alignment, while bandwidth, polarization dependence, and insertion loss remain important considerations in device design.

We describe a technique for inscribing identical fiber Bragg gratings into each core of a multicore fiber. This is achieved by introducing an additional surface into the optical path to mitigate lensing by the curved surface of the fiber cladding.

The measurement protocol and data analysis procedure are given for obtaining transverse coherence of a synchrotron radiation X-ray source along four directions simultaneously using a single 2-D checkerboard phase grating. This simple technique can be applied for complete transverse coherence characterization of X-ray sources and X-ray optics.

Fabrication of High Contrast Gratings for the Spectrum Splitting Dispersive Element in a Concentrated Photovoltaic System

2015

The fabrication of high contrast gratings as the parallel spectrum splitting dispersive element in a concentrated photovoltaic system is demonstrated. Fabrication processes including nanoimprint lithography, TiO2 sputtering and reactive ion etching are described. Reflectance measurement results are used to characterize the optical performance.
