Salinity Gradient Power

Salinity Gradient Power is renewable energy generated from the chemical potential difference between solutions with different salt concentrations, such as seawater and freshwater. In pressure-retarded osmosis (PRO), water moves through a semipermeable membrane toward the concentrated solution, creating hydraulic pressure that can drive a turbine; in reverse electrodialysis (RED), alternating ion-exchange membranes guide salt ions and produce an electrical voltage. Engineering research focuses on membrane selectivity, fouling control, pretreatment, and efficient system design. By converting mixing energy at river mouths, desalination facilities, and brine streams into electricity, the technology may complement variable renewables while recovering energy otherwise lost during water discharge.

A Hypertonic Saline Injection Technique for Inducing Glaucoma in Rats

2025

This video demonstrates glaucoma induction in an anesthetized rat by injecting hypertonic saline into the episcleral vein. The saline enters the trabecular meshwork via Schlemm's canal, causing tissue scarring, which blocks aqueous humor outflow and raises intraocular pressure. The elevated pressure damages retinal ganglion cells, leading to glaucoma.

Density Gradient Ultracentrifugation

2023

Density gradient ultracentrifugation is a common technique used to isolate and purify biomolecules and cell structures. This technique exploits the fact that, in suspension, particles that are more dense than the solvent will sediment, while those that are less dense will float. A high-speed ultracentrifuge is used to accelerate this process in order to separate biomolecules within a density gradient, which can be established by layering liquids of decreasing density in a centrifuge tube. The...

Salinity Tolerance of Alishewanella Species Isolated from Seawall Muddy Water

Begin with a culture of Alishewanella, a Gram-negative, salt-tolerant bacterium.Next, streak the culture onto agar plates containing increasing concentrations of sodium chloride to simulate varying levels of saline stress.Overlay each plate with a layer of unsolidified medium to prevent oxygen diffusion and maintain the culture in an oxygen-limited environment.Seal and incubate the plates at an optimum temperature to support bacterial growth.During incubation, the bacterium exhibits varying...

Embryonic stages are the most susceptible to xenobiotics. Although chemical toxicity depends on salinity, no method exists to test the salinity dependence of toxicity to aquatic organisms. Here, we describe a new and high-throughput method for determining the salinity dependence of toxicity to aquatic embryos.

We describe a protocol for the microfabrication of the gradient-generating microfluidic device that can generate spatial and temporal gradients in well-defined microenvironment. In this approach, the gradient-generating microfluidic device can be used to study directed cell migration, embryogenesis, wound healing, and cancer metastasis.
